I like them a lot! The first question to answer when talking about Coldplay is if you like the voice of Chris Martin.  I like his voice. The best album they made (IMO) is the Live 2003 album. Allmost all songs on this album are better than the studio versions. Highlights from this album are: A Rush Of Blood To The Head , Yellow,  Clocks.
The rest is also very good.

They're pretty good I'd say, but I'm not a huge fan or anything.  My mom is obsessed with them so I've probably heard every song by them.  The problem with them is I think a lot of their songs are too similar.

They have their moments. And A Rush Of Blood To The Head is a great rock/pop CD. But overall are average. Good when i want something calming and not prog.

They're boring and bland ... but not exactly horrible.

Extremely overrated music, such a shame.

Yeah Tongue. It's easier on the senses, unlike Magma. I guess every band has their place. Wink

It's so funny to think about that! Just imagine to play 1001° Centigrades (or enything from Magma) in a big senior party. In five minutes you will be the only person in the house .

Anyways, i think Coldplay is pretty good band, considering the others sh*t pop bands that also famous. But, as an other guy said, sounds boring after the third song in a row.

Check my bio, where I proudly state that I've never heard a Coldplay song. As I never listen to the radio, nor watch much TV (and I don't get MTV or anything like that at home), I'm quite unlikely to be familiar with any of their output. Not that I would be really interested: I usually tend to avoid trendy bands like the plague.

I've got two CDs by R.E.M., though - "Out of Time" and "Automatic for the People" - and I quite like them too. They're good listening when I don't want to engage my brain too much.

Why listen to Coldplay when there's a Radiohead, Elbow, The Doves and Athlete? All of them do various aspects of what Coldplay do much much better (and in many cases before they did it) and none of them ever get as boringly safe and vacuous as Chris Martin and his lads.

Hell, even Travis - who are fairly innocuous and often dismal - are more interesting than Coldplay.

Like Teaflux said Coldplay are boringly safe, they're ok but your not missing outon much if you havn't heard them, they're just an insipid version of a Pink Floyd song sung by Dave Gilmour. They're harmless, yet that is their downfall I doubt they're going to be remembered in a couple of decades. They don't amaze or dazzle me nor do they offend. That is Coldplay in a nutshell.
They will never be innovative.
This is the problem with the big bands like U2, and REM's music of the last 10 years or so, just boring and inoffensive and that is why people like them and probably why people will likely forget them (except maybe Everybody Hurts by REM - I could imagine a country singer doing a cover of it).

I think exactly the same (even about the song - Clocks). I'm glad they exist, so instead of kiiling myself ,or any others at nice people with boring musictaste dinnerparties, they can put on Coldplay.

Of course not, Syzygy.

One could ask the same type of question as this thread asks re any popular band. Some of us will like them, some won't, and some will be indifferent. (The more popular the artist, though, the more the "I hate them -- they're not prog" posts there will be.)

I like Coldplay, BTW, and don't give a flying F*CK if they are (or if someone thinks they are) "prog," "prog related," "prog pop" or have "proggish elements" in their music. That is all subjective, and the diverse opinions of a bunch of strangers (most of whom will be less than half my age, and generally into much heavier music than I) regarding that artist don't matter to me at all.

"Is this prog? Is that prog? Can I still like this band, and hang out here, guys? Are they just a little bit prog? Please?" -- give it a fewkin' rest, already!Dead

I am absolutely sick of such endless, pointless, purely subjective topics, and they seem to make up 50% of what is posted here! Unhappy

JUST LISTEN TO WHATEVER YOU LIKE, AND CALL IT WHAT YOU WILL -- you can call Coldplay "supercallifragilisticproggyalladoscious" rock, for all I care. I just call them COLDPLAY, and enjoy them.

ErmmIt's peer pressure, I guess -- many here seem to need constant approval of their opinions and tastes.  Get over it -- make up your own mind! You are unique, so chart your own course and know your OWN mind! Stern Smile

^ 100% opinion, and 100% irrelevant to how I regard Coldplay.

The way you folk pass judgement, categorize, and state opinion as it it were objective fact is laughable, and reveals real immaturity (if not downright arrogance), I believe.

Ever hear of individuality? Of individual taste?Confused

Overrated? The legions of people who say they enjoy them are lying or stupid?

(I hate that stupid word!)

"Such a shame?" ConfusedGet a grip! They are just a band who make music that gives many people pleasure -- they're not the world bank, a hole in the ozone, or terrorists, you know!

And why a "guilty pleasure," as someone said earlier? Are you that insecue, that you need the approval of your tastes from a buch of elitist strangers?

Music is for enjoying, not agonizing or fighting over. If you like it, then listen to it. If you don't like it, then don't listen to it. Who cares what others think? (Obviously, many cringing sheep here really do care.) My opinion will not affect your pleasure, or lack thereof.

You might as well pontificate on pasta: "Well you just like spaghetti -- I like penne and ravioli. They are so much more complex, and worthy."
