Peter Rideout needs to
A) chill
B) understand that categories are vital to discussions of music
and
3) understand that someone saying a band he likes is teh 5uxx0r isn't a personal attack

Thanks for personal judgement from afar, oh person who has never met me....
I do not need to "chill." I am fine, and do have much larger concerns beyond this site, you know.
I do not need to agree to the endless and revisionist sub-categorization of music here. Beyond the broadest categories, the categorization of art does not work, in my opinion. Artists largely reject our categories. Art resists being forced into pat little boxes.
I have taken none of this personally, nor, do I think I have personally insulted or attacked anyone on this. (edit: looking back, well maybe I got a little too "focussed" in my responses.... Sorry if I offended, but these endless "can this 30 year old band be prog now?" type threads do irk me. If all proposed artists were to be included here, the word "prog" in the site's name would lose the last vestiges of its real [historic] meaning, and the site might as well change its name to "Good Music Archives.")
(Notice I am not judging you in return, Teaflax.)
But again, sorry if I did before -- this issue never goes away, and has (especially in the last year or so, with the tremendous influx of new and younger members) often been an irritant to me here.
I still love this site, though, and enjoy these "arguments." I just seem to be in the minority on this issue -- 15 year olds, and people with a dictionary in hand are now redefining "prog." (But, I think, they are alienating many older prog fans in the process.)

Maybe you need to reconsider your manic posting style then, Peter.
Because I doubt that I'm the only one who reads your writing as being very agitated, huffy and hectoring.

(See my last post above.)
I can understand that -- advice noted & seriously considered!
I'm only human (and thus imperfect), of course. It is perhaps too easy to really "cut loose" when "communicating" via this faceless, indirect medium. (I sure don't argue so aggressively in "real" life!)
A major consideration in my rejecting admin/moderator status here was that I really value the freedom to be silly, irreverant, and sometimes not strictly PC or "nice" in my posts.
Still, unlike all too many, I do apologise, both publicly and privately, when I (unjustifiably or inadvertantly) offend.
Peace, & Happy Father's Day!

Most people who dislike coldplay have not heard their first album.
After the first album, they get more boring. But the first one has just
enough trippiness/spaciness to make it worth a listen. It's call
"Parachutes", and I'd suggest people check it out if they originally
dismissed Coldplay.

That post was directed at Teaflax, not you, and in any case I apologized for my tone in a subsequent post.
It's done.
Still, I don't know why Coldplay should be a "guilty pleasure." Just because they are popular, or "not complex enough?" It's just music -- if it gives you pleasure, it is "good."
But I am sincerely sorry for offending you -- I was rather feisty/grumpy that day, it seems.
Mea culpa!

I wonder what screwed up the format of this thread, anyway?
Should we blame Coldplay for this?

they are not prog, that's for sure... IMO, some prog fans like them 'cause they are not like all the other poppy-rock bands... their first album is excellent...

As noted, Coldplay would actually be pretty good if
there weren't already several bands doing what they do, and doing it so much better. I find it seriously hard to believe that anyone who's heard Radiohead, Elbow and The Doves would be particularly impressed.

Meh, I think Parachutes is really good. They got progressively more cliche and predicatable, though, and I don't care about them anymore.

Excellent band. Not prog, but prog-related related.

Any British group that can succeed in the US deserves some credit, but I don't like listening to Keane, Embrace or Coldplay because of those whiney vocals.

I haven't heard much, but I've got nothing against them. Nothing I have heard has impressed me enough to warrant further investigation.

I can't stand the band, but I quite enjoy Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head. Especially High Speed from Parachutes and Daylight from AROBTTH.

I don't really like Coldplay. Their songs have less alternation and sound very similar...
