I was 11 in 1973 when these bands were at their best. My favourite is Slade!
But in that year though i bought an album which was to change my musical direction....Foxtrot!

Mind you i still love Slade & Sweet to bits!!!!!

The Sweet had a few good singles but Slade beat them by a huge margin. The Sweet don't even come close to the genius that is "How does it feel?".
And I've met Noddy Holder!

Sweet, but only because I grew up on them. Slade never made it big in Sweden.

At the time I'd have picked The Sweet, but with the benefit of age and wisdom I picked Slade - I still listen to them from time to time. Blockbuster and Ballroom Blitz still kick serious butt, though.

Sweet by far. Though inconsistent to say the least, their albums feature some absolute gems of hard rock that's far from their glam rock (though they were arguably the ultimate glam rock singles act too, imo) singles. Check out songs like 'Medusa', 'Set Me Free', 'No You Don't', 'Sweet F.A.', 'Into The Night', 'Man With The Golden Arm' etc. You'd hear an innovative rock band that even have some slight prog influence (but no, I'm NOT going to propose them for prog related...). Singles wise, two of my all time fave 70s singles were by them- 'The Six Teens' and 'Fox On The Run'. So I'd say Sweet.

As for Slade, they were, imo, far more of a singles act. The album songs are just not up to the quality of the singles as I recall, though I've not heard their albums for a while. Slade never really showed any real progression beyond 3 chord pop rock, but they were damned good at it I guess....and that never harmed Status Quo!

Sweet were glam-prog. Lets have a glam-prog section on here. I'd put Tyrannosaurus Rex in there along with ...erm

The Sweet - Slade might have Brought The House Down making everyone Cum On, Feel The Noize and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, but the Sweet had some blinding vocal harmonies as the Hellraisers delivered a Ballroom Blitz looking for some Action.

In the end, this poll is won by Sweet Fanny Adams.

The important thing is not to stop questioning.

Sweet for me, but from the moment they became a real group and left the bubblegum rock BS behind. When they started making real albums.  They wezre proggier too >> check out Level Headed

Slade was a bit too noisy for me.
let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword
