Gila - nightworks (1972)

second (semi-official) album by Gila. Recorded live, the poor sound quality doesn’t blows away the high musical quality offered by the musicians. Recently published by "garden of delights", this album features massive inspired psych rock jammings really closed to the first effort provided. The comparison with Pink Floyd in their most spacey years seems to come to mind, but Gila has something else to say: their music is not a simple illustration of "Teutonic pink Floyd" but a gorgeous exploration in different "cosmic" tones and atmospheres. The rhythmical session is a kind of bluesy rock and the arrangements kind of "trippy" thanks to guitar effects, electronic manipulations and eastern harmonies . Nightworks represents German "acid" / "stoned" rock at its best. After this intense and powerful effort, the band will turn to something more folk, acoustic and exotic with the presence of Florian Fricke (from Popol Vuh) and a female singer.

i really like their first album, but didn't think it was outstanding, it kind of put me off, not sure when i will pick up another album by them, their 3rd album sounds more interesting

All three Gila albums are essential Krautrock although Wounded Knee is vastly different with the space rock more prevalent in the debut and Nightworks.
let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword
