Perhaps this has been brought up before, but I can't find it anywhere. What if Genesis Live had been a double live LP? What would you have wanted on the second LP? Would you have re-arranged the first? What would be your ideal early Genesis double live album? PLEASE ASSUME that the album was released at the same point in time as it was. So, no Firth of Fifth or In the Cage.
Mine would go like this:
Side One (Leave as-is):
Watcher of the Skies
Get 'em out by Friday
The Return of the Giant Hogweed
Side Two:
Stagnation
The Fountain of Salmacis
Seven Stones
Can-Utility and the Coastliners
Side Three:
Supper's Ready
Side Four (Side Two of original):
The Musical Box
The Knife
I'm not entirely certain if all of these were even played live, but that'd be a cool collection, and it would shine some light on some less recognised Genesis songs (Seven Stones, CUATC).
So, what do you think?

I'd say what you have there is a pretty good selection/positioning.

Well, if you do what I did once, take "Stagnation" and "Supper's Ready" from Disc 3 of the Archives Vol. 1 set, and you have an 80 minute disc of Pre-"Pound" Genesis songs.
I'm fairly certain that "Fountain of Salmacis", "Seven Stones" and "Can Utility" were all played live, although instead of the last two, I would rather have heard another song from Trespass, maybe White Mountain, and the single-release "Twilight Alehouse". It would've been a graet way to get that song "out there" and listened to, since it was never released on a proper album (also like "Happy The Man"). Great idea, though! I recently remixed my Genesis CD-Copies and made them "expanded" editions that include unreleased studio recordings (mostly the first two albums), live versions, and other rarities from each album's respective era. Trespass includes the aforementioned "Stagnation (Live)" and my CD copy of Live includes the Pound-Tour "Supper's Ready", while the rest of that set (the first side of SEBTP oddly enough) fits nicely on a disc with the SEBTP album. 24 CD-R's, but a LOT of Genesis goodness...mmmmm... -Marc. |

Genesis Live was suposed to be a double LP with Supper's Ready and Fountain of Salmacis, but the label didn't wanted to take the risk.

Hate to break it to you, but Genesis Live was released as a double album . . . a test-pressing of the Leicester/Manchester 1973 concert that was to be used on the official Genesis Live LPs (avec Supper's Ready!) which is easily the rarest and most valuable Genesis record EVER Check out the link below . . . Gawd, I hope they find the masters, somewhere!!!!

Isn't that what I said before?
It was suposed to be a double album, but it was never released as a double album.
Those pressings were not official, only a copy of all the availlable material from the Leicester concert.

Good idea about that 2-live LP but I prefer the original Genesis Live cover ..! |

I also read that, but by now, they should've issued them as bonus tracks.

If I remember correctly, it was issued as a budget release - Genesis weren't that well known at the time. I bought it when it came out (it was my second ever LP) and I think it was £1.99. If it had been a double, I probably wouldn't have been able to buy it out of my pocket money. The downside was I didn't know about Supper's Ready for quite a few years. Yep! By releasing Genesis Live as a single, budget-priced lp Charisma managed to have a wider distribution than for the previous albums. It sold pretty well, reaching position 9 in the UK charts and paved the way for the success of Selling England. Of course all this would have been impossible if they had decided to release it as a double. |

Like Letter M said, the Archives 1 box set has a wealth of early live stuff from that period. I actually did the same thing and made my own CD of early live stuff from the two sources
Also there used to be a live video version of 'Salmacis' circa 72-73 floating around the internet. It was pretty crappy sounding production wise, but interesting nonetheless.
