I like the music of Asia.  I've really been getting into their first five albums(the three with Wetton, and the two post-Wetton albums with John Payne as vocalist), and I think they're really a great band. I'm not sure how the next three stand up, though.
I agree that they're more pop than prog, but it's well-written pop rock with amazing melodies and music. I don't really understand why they get slammed so much.

If you like it, great. I really don't find it all that strong. It seems pretty formulaic to me.

Well, they are commercial, but they aren't bad at all. I like them myself to some extent. I consider Alpha the best, and it also has my favorite Asia song on it, "Open Your Eyes" (it's so catchy!). The later stuff may be more prog influenced, but I think it's pretty boring.

Count me among the Asia fans as well. Good music, pretty strong writing, good lyrics, what's not to like?
Check out the Aura disc, very good. They do an excellent version of Ready to go Home, from 10CC.
It's easy to cast aspersions on some of the prog groups around, but why bother? You like what you like.

Asia's debut hinted at a new direction for prog that was modified largely due to punk rock into a much simpler form of prog rock. The genre could be credited to Saga who started playing a type of music similar to Asia a few years earlier. It has it's prog moments every now and then. I lost interest in Asia after "Alpha" which was and still is the best example of an over-produced album. In the battle for new prog around 1980, neo prog won (unfortunately).

The first Asia album is an extension of what Downs and Howe were doing on Drama. Steve Howe uses many of the same licks on the first Asia album as he did on Drama. If you like Drama, chances are you will like the first Asia album.

Their debut has some great prog moments amongst the AORish material and I still like it.
Alpha is not as good as they went for a straight pop/rock approach with little to get the average prog fan interested.Howe was not happy with this and fell out with Wetton over the direction.For this reason Wetton left and was then replaced by Greg Lake for one live performance.This was not entirely successfull so the record company decided Asia had to have Wetton in it if it was to carry on.Wetton was still at odds with Howe however so Howe left and was replaced by Mandy Meyer who was a heavy rock guitarist.They then adopted a straight AOR approach.I didn't really care much for them after that.

Well, since when it is something shamefull to enjoy the music of ASIA? I just don't understand that. I like their music a lot. So, put me at the wall of shame. They made accessible, melodic music. I know these artists all came from bands that made prog history in the 70s, but nobody is in the position to judge why these musicians chose to make this kind of music; you either LIKE the music or you DON'T. That's all.
