I don't believe so. He hasn't really made an impact on the progressive genre, or even progressive musicians for that matter. He's had a great impact on the metal genre, but the only virtuosos I would consider for inclustion are Eklundh, Vai, Satch, MacAlpine, and others like that who have been part of the genre.

^ except for Satch (who I think is prog related at best) I agree with you. Malmsteen is purely neoclassical, and the only reason for including him is the presence of other purely neo-classical metal bands ... most prominently: Rhapsody. But I'd rather remove Rhapsody than including Malmsteen ...

I agree with you too. Perhaps we need to take another look at our addition of Rhapsody.

Satch is definitly not prog enough to be here. The genre/term "shred" was coined for a reason.

^ there are quite some shred artists which are also quite progressive ... Tony MacAlpine for instance. He's also quite neoclassical, but much more inventive than Malmsteen and with a strong Jazz influence.

Malmsteen is great,and I bought Rising Force when it came out and it literally blew me away.But he isn't prog ANYTHING...purely neo-classical metal.
If any guitarist belongs here it's Marty Friedman or Tony McAlpine.Eklundh has already been added.

Well, hopefully the rest of our cheese is much better than that... I really loved Tony R's definition of their new name as "Rhapsody of Dire"!

Topic creator must be joking. Seriously, Malmsteen is anti-prog, as far
as inventiveness goes. All his stuff sounds the same. As for Rhapsody,
I suggest you take them out.

Although some of his material is quiet good,(mostly earlier material) he has too big an ego to have highly talented musicians surrounding him and assisting in the writing of quality material. Its about him and only him.
I saw him live in a club a number of years back for $10 and it was fairly entertaining. Worth the $10.
I don't consider him prog though.

OK, we agree that he isn´t prog, but saying he can hardly play and that he does simple things at high speed, that is just plain ridiculous.

That depends on how skilled a musician you are, and how big your
knowledge of music is. There's so much mpre you need to know to be a
great guitarplayer than just w**king scales all day long.
