I can't believe it but it is true. this is the 2nd time in too short of a time period that one of my favorite drummers has quit one of my favorite bands.(lopez leaving opeth). Theodore is being replaced by blake fleming who has played with the band before.  What are your thoughts on this depressing event?

I've never liked TMV so much, but that drummer rocked on the band. The energy (widely influenced by John "Bonzo" Bonham) he has is very important to the band. What a pity ... Disapprove

His drumming was for me one of the main attractions about TMV's music.

Shame, his drumming was integral to their sound. What's Blake Fleming like?

I wouldn't worry too much though, TMV will probably find an appropriate drummer that fills Jon's shoes alright....plus Jon just might form another rocking band in the future.

I can't believe it. He added so much to the band dynamic, especially at live performances.

Bad news indeed. I listened to "Deloused..." twice in 12 hours in order to write a review (which I posted yesterday morning), and Jon Theodore's drumming really impressed the heck out of me. Let's just hope his replacement is a good one...Unhappy

I read about this the other day, and was shocked. Jon Theodore's drums are, for many, a very integral part to the Mars Volta sound. I personally felt that he was one the very best up-and-coming progressive drummers. I have heard good things, however, about Jon's replacement, Blake Fleming. Apparently, he's just as insane as Jon is, and he even played on the original Mars Volta demos. So, HOPEFULLY, all hope is not lost.

I actually disagree. maybe it was just the show that I saw, but he seemed like a wind-up toy. Like someone just wound him up and let him loose. he didn't appear to be listening to what the rest of the band was doing at any point.

He IS a phenomenal drummer, however, and in the studio he was a very important part of their sound. This news is depressing to me. Cry

It's a great time to be a TMV fan.

I'm not worried.

I'm not worried either...judging by Blake Flemming's material...he should be a worthy replacement.

And honestly, Theodore was good...it's just I really never saw what was so 'otherworldly' about him.  The band to me is always first and foremost Cedric and Omar...their bassist and saxophonist have definitely stepped up on this new one though, and when Ikey comes through he plays some nice stuff.

Here is a link to what this 'Blake' character can do:

Still not too happy about the whole thing but at least he sounds promising...

I really think it was jsut your show. I've seen TMV three times, and all time Jon and Omar carried the band in the jam sessions and onstage energy.

Really disappointing news Cry, Jon will be missed. He's one of my favourite drummers (as was Lopez) so I hope to hear something new and exciting from him in the near future. I'd really like to know what happened, though.

Fortunately, though, the more I read about Blake, the more optimistic I'm becoming about the future of TMV. He helped found the band back in 2001 and has played in a number of prominent experimental bands over the years so I get the feeling he wasn't just a random choice for replacement. The guys in The Mars Volta obviously know him well and think he'll be a suitable replacement, so here's hoping for a bright future for a great band.

I see it as a glimmer of hope. The Mars Volta will always retain their style, and finding a drummer to keep up with their fluid and crazy music is not that hard, and I see they've alread filled the hole. Theodore will go on to better things.

NOOOO! That's too bad. He was the most talented musician in the band.

You've just had a heavy session of electroshock therapy, and you're more relaxed than you've been in weeks.
