Moving up the timeline of prog rock from the 70's to the 80's, the natural thing to do would be to listen to neo-prog, but I wanted to try something different.

Through listening to R.I.O, mainly Art Bears and This Heat, I heard the term "post-punk". I became curious and read a little about it, and I decided I wanted to give it a try.

What I want is recommendations for artists/albums which would help me make a smooth transition from R.I.O (which is the closest thing in prog to post-punk) and post-punk, or artists/albums that are on the border line of the two genres.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Edit: Do you think I should post this in the Prog Music Lounge?

Definitely, The Pop Group!

I've heard of them before. Thanks, I'll be sure to check them out!

Canterbury/Jazz-Rock Specialist eh? You sound like my kind of specialist.

Any more suggestions?

There's a very good book called Rip It Up and Start Again by Simon Reynolds, which gives an overview of the post punk scene 1978 - 1984.

The Pop Group were excellent, and they produced 2 interesting offshoots: Rip, Rig and Panic went more in the free jazz direction, while Pigbag played a kind of post punk jazz funk.

Pere Ubu were another excellent band, playing a kind of Beefheart-derived noise they called avant garage. From their 3rd album (New Picnic Time) a RIO influence also came in, and mainman David Thomas has had a parallel solo career since the early 80s. Chris Cutler has worked with both Ubu and Thomas, as have assorted other RIO musicians.

Cabaret Voltaire produced some very interesting lo fi electronica on their early albums - try Red Mecca or 2 x 45 - but later became more electronic dance oriented. Not necessarily a bad thing, but they just didn't do it that well.

Also worth checking out are bands like Wire, The Fall, Magazine, early Scritti Politti, Joy Division and Durutti Column. There are countless other mostly forgotten experimentalists from those days - it was a highly creative time
'Like so many of you
I've got my doubts about how much to contribute
to the already rich among us...'

Yeah, PIL are great too, especially Metal Box (Second Edition). I have a two disc set of various songs and such by post punk bands issued by rough trade. It helped me get into a lot of post punk stuff, so I definitely recommend checking it out as well.

Here's a link for reference:
