Topic: Eric Clapton - Pilgrim (1998 album) Posted: August 30 2006 at 17:36 |
I just want to know your opinion about this album. Some say it's Clapton's worst album, some say it's great, some say it's average, some say it's just good.
Well, I don't know what to say; I like it but the thing is it "grew on me", I didn't like it at first which was strange for a Clapton album . So, what do you think about this album?

Myself a big Clapton fan for more years than i dare to remember i found "Pilgrim" a very good album indeed, it is a very relaxing listen, superb sound quality, though the songs are good there are no real standout classic songs, though i found "River of Tears" could possibly cut it as a Clapton Classic! The album finds Eric in a very contemplative laid back mood, a good album to include in any Clapton collection, though not a classic...agree?

One of Eric's most maddening collections. The good songs are
great and the bad songs are almost unlistenable. I love "My
Father's Eyes" "River of Tears" and his brilliant cover of the Bob
Dylan tune especially. Some of the best stuff he's ever
recorded. It's one of those albums I have to use the skip button
frequently, though.

Tried to listen to August again a few years ago, thinking that I must
have gotten it wrong for some reason. But no. It's still
bad and may be his worst ever.

"Pilgrim" was O.K., "August" stunk, and "Back Home" bored me to tears.

I've not been brave enough to go back to August, after a very fast reselling to the secondhand store I bought it from. God knows what Clapton - or his record company - was trying to do, but it sounded like a seismic shift from the familiar blues (which is really the acceptable limit for Clapton's vocal powers), to a pop mainstream andfailed abyssmally. Was Phil Collins responsible for producing it, or did he just play the drums. I have a horrible feeling that it was one of Clapton's best selling albums - what's that about fooling most of the people most of the time?

BTW do others find with From the cradle, (and with a wonder guest list of former Chess Records players) that Clapton's voice was sometimes stretched beyond breaking point?

From the Cradle was a good album but, for me, a little blues goes a very long way. Clapton's voice has a unique tone to it and despite the fact that he'd love to be a blues singer his vocals are better when he does rock or pop. Journeyman is a great example of when he's at his best. The album has a little of everything and it doesn't get tedious. After Pilgrim I became a lot more wary of what direction he was going in and skipped on Reptile and the latest. From what I've heard of them in samples on Amazon it sounds like he's just going through the motions and fulfilling his contract. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Old musicians deserve to retire, too! Lord knows he's left us a great legacy of outstanding music to last for centuries to come.

"August" is strongly recommended to Rock'n'Roll Hall of Shame - but I think "Behind the Sun" is even worst. About "Pilgrim", it's simply crap, IMHO.
