Peart.  The original prog-metal drum god.  Apparently Porntoy stated in his graduate book that he would like to become the second Neil Peart.  Even though he is an AMAZINGLY talented drummer, that's waht he'll always remain to me, the second Neil Peart.

I would have said Peart up until Moving Pictures but his 80's & 90's drumming became too uniform, almost robotic like. He's been playing the same solo for the past 20 years!

Portnoy is a much better technical player and his playing can adapt to any style!

Both are incredibly talented; however, I think Peart is technically better. He quite frankly never sounds like just an ordinary drummer, even when he's doing a pretty straight ahead drum pattern or even a fill.

I hate Portnoys snare sound =D naah I just find Peart's beats and fills 100x more unique and interesting than Portnoy's, though Portnoy is great also.

Who is better at the double bass pedal, however? Portnoy seems to use his a lot more, that's for sure.

Eh, Carey's good, but I'd put him against Peart in every facet of the kit any day.
