I just put them all on the list, although I suspect, that no-one will vote for Andy McCulloch or Richard Palmer-James. I didn't put the guest musicians on the list: Keith Tippett, Jon Anderson etc.
 
My favorite has to be John Wetton, followed by Adrian Belew. Belew probably has a better connection with Fripp, but the Wetton-era is the ultimate KC era IMHO.

Not an easy question. First of all, in which sense "the most important"? As a band founders, Michael Giles and Ian McDonald are the most important, without them the group would never raise. Musically, Mel Collins and Bill Bruford are the most important, they are, in my opinion, the most talented musicians from all the KC members.
 
Let's try to think by the rule of contraries, going from the opposite, posing the question: "Who's the person in KC, besides Fripp, which it is impossible to imagine the group without?" Without whom KC would never be KC? Who is impossible to be changed by anyone? Both the history of the group and the internal feelings say: Adrian Belew.

    It depends on the period. In the beginning, Greg Lake was very important. Up to "Red" Bruford and Wetton were the focus. As the band is now, Adrian Belew would be the most important.

Bruf, of course! No, really, his playing style I think exactly fits what King Crimson is about. Disciplined recklessness, jazz played like rock, and improv excelence!

Either McDonald, or for later work Belew. I'm a big Bruford fan and I know he's been an integral part of KC for large chunks of its history but, he doesn't have the creative talent of either of the above gents.
I vote McDonald as no-one else has yet!

McDonald for me too ... his songwriting/mellotron/flute/sax-playing may only have graced one album, but Fripp spent quite some time trying to recreate the magic

i actually think Belew [or Baloo, as me and a friend sometimes call him Tongue], Levin and Bruford are all equally important in defining the Crimson spirit

voted for Levin as his contribution to the rename of KC is equally important in terms of rhythm section inovation [plus he's always underrated], but probably Bruford is most likely to get all the votes [and rightfully]

I went with Bruford, because he is the most amazing drummer I've ever heard and I think he contributed to the KC sound in a way nobody else could have. I do, however, agree that Giles& Giles were integral to the formation of the band in the first place.

Adrian Bellew. The logical construction of the lyrics, plus some very influential music values. Bruford knows how to drum, and certainly would be most difficult to replace (Masteloootoooo....), but without Adrian Bellew there would not be an actual clever King Crimson to listen to this days.

John Wetton is a fave, he did fantastic under Fripp's direction. On his own however, he wasn't that great unlike Bruford.
 
Mel Collins is the one for me, he is a most versatile and productive artist, he is my hero!

Love his work in Camel, though I have yet to hear all albums he did with them.  Great musician!
