How do you choose which band(s) to listen to each day-- is it mood, whimsey, rotation? What's the thought process and are you always pleased with your selections?

most times, it's how im feeling and what i want to bring out those emotions or supress them. i listen to a lot of funky jazz-rock cause i love it and makes me feel good everytime. sometimes i want an epic musical experience, so the prog rock comes in
though with my vast musical library, it can be hard to decide on what i want to listen to...

Basically I think of the genre I want to listen to, like today I felt like Prog-Metal so I chose a selection of albums. Such as Ayreon - Actual Fantasy (first listen), Death - Symbolic.
Although sometimes I will just liten to classics eg. Pink Floyd or other times I will make a playlist of albums I have not listened to.

Y'know, I just picked up Sabbath's Vol. 4 and though not really prog nor metal, it is an excellent early example of, perhaps, 'heavy prog' and one of their overlooked classics.

Totally random. I go through my library, and I choose the album I feel like listening to at the moment.
Regarding Black Sabbath: Yes, they do have their Proggish moments, but
they are not many enough for them to be called Heavy Prog. Still firmly
in the Hard Rock field.

Some times someone here (or elsewhere) will mention an album that they just got back into or just listened to and that will spark some interest. I'm listening to A Passion Play by Jethro Tull right now because it was mentioned elsewhere.
After collecting nearly a 1,000 albums, you forget about some of the greats and it takes some reminding.
Otherwise, I think it kind of a mood thing.

I keep my cd's in boxes,and basically go through each box, one at a time.So i guess i have a bit of a rotation going.I just don't want to leave out any that i do like.The ones i don't like have their special box too,and are completely ignored.

I usually have a rotation process...but sometimes if I'm bored and want to hear something in particular I'll grab it and throw it on.

True, though I was speaking of 'Vol 4' in particular, which I suspect many (even hard rock fans) haven't heard.

Mood usually, for example sometimes I just can't take remotedly heavy music so I listen to Schulze and Tangerine Dream. And there are other days where I feel like listening to Meshuggah and Opeth

I go on a mood=genre system most of the time, but there are artists that I love so much that I play them almost everyday.
Oh and TheMiracle, Maiden bashing will not be tolerated!!!

I used to have this program that created random lists from my entire mp3 collection.
It used a ranking system so I would hear my favorite tracks more often.
I would then upload these on my mp3 player.
Usually I'd use the program a couple of months then switch to listening to albums.
But it was way too much work to maintain and anyway my collection has grown too big for it. Artists just don't turn up frequently enough if I use it now.
I have a 1 gig USB stick player and usually fill it up in the weekend then listen to it all week. As a rule I almost always keep at least 1 day between hearing the same album.
The rest is just mood I guess.

lightbulb son-- kudos to your support of Maiden. Though unabashedly metal, they were also remarkably progressive in contrast to the stuff before them, i.e. Zep, Sabbath and Scorps.
