Józef Skrzek is, as many of you know (or so I hope), the leader of SBB (which is included here under jazz rock label). But he also released some solo albums of which I've got only one - "Ojciec chrzestny Dominika" (in english: "Dominic's Godfather") - and judging from this one Józef Skrzek's solo career should be at least considered for inclusion. But I don't know many of his other albums (not all his albums have been remastered on CDs yet, though). Can anyone support me?

I never heard his solo albums, because I'm not an SBB fan. As I know ROCK-SERWIS offers lots of his CDs.

SBB happens to be one of my favourite bands - if not the most fave - from Eastern Europe. I have many of their albums and I've seen them live on many occassions.
Admittedly, I prefer their more improvised pieces and whilst Skrzek is a fantastic musician, his - at times - overindulgent singing tends to interfere with my musical enjoyment. Indeed, as soon as I master how to edit CDs in my collection, about half of his vocals will be removed.
I had a number of solo albums by him, none captivated me enough to hold onto them. Frankly, I'd be happier if SBB were an instrumental band.
It's of a personal preference and I assume that his solo works may be appreciated by others.

I think his best solo album is Pamietnik Karoliny. I own it by LP records. He has released many solo albums, but I don't own almost of them. Some of them are apparently different from progressive rock that we usually imagine. |

Not only a good keyboardist, but also a good vocalist. I own Ojciec chrzestny Dominika, it's a great album. He collaborated with Colin Bass (bassist for Camel) but nothing exceptional resulting from this collaboration. I don't know anything more about his solo career. I am glad to see he keeps the polish language for his lyrics.

Agreed. Let me add that Józef Skrzek is a one man orchestra on this album. He plays all instruments: piano, Fender piano, clavinet D6, polymoog, minimoog, micromoog, sonicsixmoog, davolisint, concert spectrum, bass guitar, japan banjo, guitar 6-strings, guitar 12-strings, organ, Hammond organ, steel guitar, harmonica, bass, marimba, drums, kettledrums, cymbals, gong, triangle, tambourine, cowbell, vocal, applause. Kinda Mike Oldfield. |

From New Gibraltar Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock (http://www.gepr.net/geprfram.htm):
Skrzek is the leader of SBB, but here [Ojciec chrzestny Dominika] he is truly solo, playing everything from drums to myriad of keyboard and string instruments. The two long suites that make up Ojciec chrzestny Dominika (LP Muza SX 1967; CD Golland 101) marshal the full range of his musical influences, including bluesy vocal meditations, spacey synthesizer painting, quasi-classical keyboard developments and touches of jazz and East European folk melodies. However, the main artillery is provided by barrages of truly soaring melodies, amplified into ground-shattering detonations by a lavishly deployed symphonic palette of guitars, keyboards and Skrezk's distinct vocals. The music can get as bombastic as the worst of ELP at times, but the sheer splendour of the melodies and the ever-evolving arrangements stemming from Skrzek's passionate and superbly imaginative playing keep it confidently afloat where ELP ingloriously capsized. Not having other virtuoso players to jam with naturally helps make it more vocal-oriented than most SBB albums, but Ojciec chrzestny Dominika is all the better because of it. In fact, along with Exodus' The Most Beautiful Day, this is probably the best symphonic progressive rock album ever made in Poland. -- Kai Karmanheimo |

Bartek, you should probably submit the artist directly to the Symphonic team - including samples or whatever material you have available. I know we of the ART usually have bands submitted directly to us by PM rather than put up here for notice.

I hope you don't mean Marek Grechuta, do you?! As for Józef Skrzek he recorded various music - symphonic prog (like "Ojciec chrzestny Dominika"), one album completely electronic ("Podróż w krainę wyobraźni") but also pop-rock and religious music (in tribute to John Paul II). I can send you "Ojciec chrzestny Dominika". That's his only album I've got. Edited by Tuzvihar - February 14 2007 at 09:36 |
