Topic: Iron Maiden?? Faster U2! Posted: October 02 2006 at 13:38 |
I did not want to propose U2 to become a part of ProgArchives, but now when I see Iron Maiden there I want to tell as much honestly as I can that in my eyes U2 should be in prog-related styles on PA. For their "another" and sometimes more experimental attitude to music when they played post-punk (An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart or Tomorrow), for their climatic electronic songs when they cooperated with Brian Eno (on Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree) and for album Zooropa including Zooropa - really great progressive stuff, Numb - avant-garde! and few others. I know it might become funny but it's true :) btw. best wishes for people thinking that Iron Maiden is prog...

Nobody thinks Iron Maiden is prog. They are in prog-related,they influenced a whole generation of musicians and had a huge impact on the development of progressive metal.

Thank you for the wishes. However, I'd like to point out to you that IM were added in PROG RELATED - and I'd recommend you read the definition of this category, before you post such sarcastic proposals. There is a HUGE difference between U2 and Maiden - and I should know, as I've been a keen follower of both bands since their inception. Maiden are also featured on other prog websites (such as ProgressoR, Sea of Tranquility and ProgressiveEars - which, incidentally, are far more inclusive than PA will ever be), so we're not the first idiots to add them to our DB.
BTW, the addition was made (by me, a few hours ago) after a long debate, and certainly not before the green light was given at Admin level. I was well aware that we would be opening up a can of worms, but their addition is no more controversial than others that have been made so far.

ok, maybe I exaggerated a little bit, but it was the only time for me to write that U2 deserve being at least at progressive forum, if they couldn't be on progarchives. btw. my last post wasn't fully sarcastic, only a little bit ;)

| Just don't pay attention to those. I don't care if Tom Jones ends up listed here, as the result of him being prog related to the cousin of the brother fo the guy that invented the sofa in wich Peter Hammill use to sleep. Including everyone, but not Bowie, is enough proof that debate lead to weird conclusions sometimes. (See "Mercury Rev". Also listed. Still, no Bowie). I need Bowie. In fact, you need Bowie. You just don't know yet.

There will inevitably be an influx of IM reviews, it happens each time a better known band is added. these will quickly ease of though, and things will return to normal. We had the same predictions of being over run when The Beatles, Radiohead, Deep Purple etc., were added.
At the risk of sounding like a cracked record, the addition of one band does not set a precedent to justify any other. Every band must be judged on their own merits. The argument that if X is here so shoudl Y be does not carry any weight when admissions are being considered.

| look we get this furore with every "contraversial" addition. Where you here when Radiohead were added? All the scare stories were saying "This is the end of PA" or "the frontpage will be full of reviews by Indie Rock fans" It never happened....this too will die down and life will carry on as before. Besides this pales into insignificence compared to who's currently being considered for addition....

I sincerely hope this proves to be true, although I feel that
metalheads won't stop. They are not just like your average rock fan.

I don't really mind about their addition. What makes me sad is that i used to discover new bands through the first page of PA and now it's full of five star reviews for Iron Maiden cds...
Moreover, I always thought that the prog-reletad category consisted of very few bands and that was fine with me but how can iron maiden be there while bands with much more prog moments aren't like Katatonia and Nevermore (which I don't personaly like very much).
