Topic: Asia vs. GPS Posted: October 04 2006 at 20:29 |
Unsure at this point if enough people have picked up the new GPS to make this poll relevant; however, for those who have, which do you prefer? I'm not a big John Payne fan, but I do find his bass playing to be better than his vocals. That being said, the former seems to be somewhat stronger than the latter on Window To The Soul. Some of his vocals are a bit too gruff in spots, but I really admire him as a bass player. As for a comparison, I'm preferring the new GPS over the final Asia disc with Payne. Window To The Soul has a better flow than Silent Nation and the production is better. What's even more important to me is the absence of Chris Slade, whom I've never been a big fan. Schellen is a lot more dynamic and better suited to music like what's on this disc. It will be interesting to see how this band evolves, but they've definitely got a nice start. Not the best disc of 2006 (not even in the top 6 or 7), but still nice to have. E

It's essentially Asia without Geoff Downes on keyboards. Spock's Beard's Ryo Okumoto handles that. I think their site is www.musicbygps.com. E

I've really not enjoyed anything by Asia since Aqua ... maybe even earlier. I also am not a big fan of John Payne. However, The GPS record was very enjoyable. To my ears, it's more "prog-related' than "prog", with more of a classic rock vibe. Still, in all it's a very good record.

Unfortunately I haven't heard the GPS album yet.
Anyway, Silent Nation is very enjyable as far as I'm concerned.

I'm in the same boat Cristi and I have to agree that Silent Nation is a damn good album, particularly Blue Moon Monday.
