Please explain if you say yes.

I won't vote, but I would say yes as, he really reminds me at times of Pink Floyd (musically of course).  Your insight is appreciated.

Isn't he New Age? If we put Kitaro, what's next? David Arkenstone and Yanni?

No, but let me explain:

I see him as 'New Age," and new age music is not here (previous votes & threads  indicated the majority don't want it here, either).

Still, to ME, Kitaro and various other "new age" is much more (or at least as much) akin to prog than some of the other supposed "prog" & "related" stuff I hear here.

(Not to mention any one genre -- but I think the average prog fan of my generation is much more likely to enjoy Kitaro, or Vollenweider, that say ____m ______r or ____h ____l.)

No offense implied to those who like them!

Thus, until new age as a whole is deemed "prog" or "related," Kitaro does not "belong."
"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

I think Kitaro could and would fit into a combination of categories. Go with me here; an unusual blend of progressive electronic, psychedelic/space, experimental and symphonic. You can go to virtually any music store and find Kitaro in the "New Age" section, but look a little further in the rack and you just might find Tangerine Dream and Vangelis. Tell me what y'all think.

Actually Peter there is some 'New Age' here already in the form of some Vangelis,Mike Oldfield and Tangerine Dream albums. There's also Eddie Jobsons 'Theme Of Secrets'.The horse has already bolted!Tongue

That said I voted 'No' as I think Kitaro is just very dull and has no progressive ideas whatsover.I think the likes of Stephen Caudel and Mark Isham should be considered for inclusion before him.Even Clair Hammill maybe.

Kitaro sounds very boring and repetitive to me, I often fall asleep when listening to his music, however I voted "Yes" as this site bears clear inclusive tendencies, and so many non-prog bands are already here, that it makes no point whatsoever to argue against inclusion of another one - not a bad artist at all.

i think his 70s works (and perhaps early 80s) would fall under the prog electronic category.....and do remember he was a member of Jap psych-space rock band Far East Family Band.........

No such genre here.

Do you propose that New Age <> Prog in any circumstances? Even prog related? F.ex. JADE WARRIOR has done new age oriented recordings like "Breathing The Storm".

LOL No Eetu, this is my attempt of sense of humour:
  1. New Age is not remotely Prog
  2. Kitaro is no even New Age, just plain boring music releated to this Genre created to relax stressed Yuppies.
  3. Ergo, Kitaro shouldn't even be mentioned here.

some rather mixed opinions here, i will investigate the group further. if anyone is a fan of Kitaro and can offer any reasonable arguments for or against their suggested inclusion your views will of course be appreciated!Smile

because of his involvement with "Far East Family Band" he could have a case, though his solo albums could be a different kettle of sushi !

I have seen Kitaro listed in other Prog sites, maybe each Prog site has various views on Prog I don't know??

Kitaro has contributed with the Far East Family Band, but unsure of his sure works.

I haven't heard his solo stuff!!
