Topic: Opeth and Camel Posted: October 24 2006 at 05:17 |
Hey guys. I love opeth very much. Their quiet parts are often compared
to a band called camel who i have never heard anything by. Even Mikael
Akerfeldt himself said that 'Ending credits' is ripped off from camel.
What album would be a good one to start with if i wanted to hear stuff
similar to opeth?

I'll second that. Moon Madness is my favourite.

When people get lost in thought it's often because it's unfamiliar territory.

Though I've listened to it plenty of times, I just can't get into Snowgoose. This is the only Camel album I own. Although I love the 70's prog sound, it sounds a bit too dated for me. Although I'm not a fan of the word "cheesy," a lot of that album is indeed cheesy for me.
Is Moodmadness very different, or do you think I'd give it the same fate?

Camel's self-titled debut album is the one where you will hear the resemblance to Opeth.

Agreed. The three essential Camel albums. You NEED to get those.

For starters, there are lyrics on Moonmadness, and the songs are not linked to one another. It's a bit more rock (only a bit). But you not liking The Snow Goose???
I think it's a masterpiece, and should be in the top ten on PA, right next to Thick as a Brick.

I'll second that. Moon Madness is my favourite. | Moonmadness is also Mickaels favorite album and Camel his favorite band, yet the influences are not increidible evident...if no one had told me Mickaels is such a Camel freak I would have never seen a conection between Camel and Opeth

| i can understand why someone would think it is cheesy, but i still have to disagree Camel always had a professional approach to the music they put out, plus they were all nice guys, no egos This album is pretty much the "peter and the wolf" of symphonic prog rock, it is a masterpiece just by itself and I recommend everyone to grab a copy of the short story. I didnt really know what the story was, I just liked the music, but once you have read it, it becomes very touching, in a way the more than the music itself touches you,, and maybe that is where the "cheesy" quality comes through, the story is actually pretty good, it has a weird pacing which sort of like the tempo changing, but in the story, many moods, dark story Aaron

Sorry, never heard opeth, but Camel i discovered recently due to PA. Damn they are good!
I just can't stop playing moonmadness (first song enter so bright!) and Snowgoose (First song enters so dark!) each time I'm free from the world. I've been spinning them for 3 months now, each time i can. BTW I made a combo including "in the land of Gray and Pink" and the 3 CDs are always round and round on my stereo. I'm in the addiction stage with the three. Highly recommendable, indeed.

I like Tormato, so shoot me! Every person in the world can't think the same.

I find that camel is the only true prog band of the two. Opeth claims to be "Prog Metal" or whatever, but their riffs are interchangeable. Thats not progressive, thats just boring.

lol i don't think Opeth has ever "claimed" to be anything
actually most bands never claim to be anything, they usually let the music speak for itself
I don't think Phil Collins went and said, "hey guys we are a pop rock band now, before we were the leaders of the progressive music"
sigh, can't do much to persuade closed-minded people

I worded that in a way that made me sound ignorant. But Ive seen them praised for their progressive influences many many times, and basically the fact that theyre even accepted on this site kind of suprises me. I dont mean for that to offend anyone, and I certainly do not think I am closed minded.
