I agree. Why fusion is even on this site, I'll never understand. I pine for the good old days...

It's the same guy. Great minds think alike.

Of course the converse view says that a number of people who have not supported their ratings with reviews are dragging it UP!

Sometimes things don't happen completely matematically. Or at least I think so. I remember rating an album with only 1 rating till then (no review), 4 stars. Upon my long (Wink) review, plus the rating (2 stars mine), the overall wasn't 3 stars, but 2.5 stars.

No ...what I'm saying is...if 12 out of 23 ratings are 5 stars... and 5 out of the 23 ratings are 4 stars...then only an f'd up sytem could produce an overall rating of less than 4 stars...since only 6 ratings are less than 4 stars.

So (follow me closley) what I'm saying is..."the system is f'd up."

Well I'm surprised it got that, to be honest. I haven't heard this for a few years but I didn't like this anywhere near as much as 'Inner Mountain Flame', 'Birds Of Fire' or even some of their solo albums. The funk (that whole 'let me fulfil my love' stuff) had began to set in- not a good idea, imo.

Exactly !!!Clap

The second Mahavishnu line-up does not even come to the waist of the first line-up (in terms of studio albums anyway). And please  do not be fooled by the artwork llinking it to BOF. VOTEB is rather listeless funk-jazz/fusion rather than the red-hot bunring jazz rock of IMF or BOF.

3.97 is 4 anyway. Which VOTEB does not deserve (IMHO)

But I will admit that this example of weighed average is a bit disturbing because obviously most or all of the five stars are unwritten (just two and non-PRs) and only three of the four stars are written (of which two arte PRs)
let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

That's because ratings are weighted - ratings without reviews carry less weight than those with a review.Smile

MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA "Visions Of The Emerald Beyond " ratings distribution

(23 entries)

Essential: a masterpiece of progressive music (52% = 12 entries)

Excellent addition to any prog music collection (22% = 5 entries)

Good, but non-essential (17% = 4 entries)

Collectors/fans only (4% = 1 entry)

Poor. Only for completionists (4% = 1 entry)

Rating = 3.97 STARS??????????

These weighted averages are a JOKE.   V.O.T.E.B. is one of the greatest albums of the 70's and because 3 "experts" LOL give it 3 stars, it gets dragged down.

So what you're saying is people aren't allowed to have a different opinion to you?

The fact that you put "experts" in quotes suggests that people who gave it 3 stars don't know what they're talking about. I suspect the fact that it has a rating of less than 4 is due to the fact that collaborators and members reviews get rated higher. This is borne out by the fact that well-respected members such as Sean Trane and VibrationBaby gave it 3 stars and only 2 of the people who gave it 5 stars have backed up this rating with a review.

Since when is 4 stars (or 3.97) anything less than a great rating?

By definition, a four star album is an "excellent addtion to any prog music collection."

You are absolutely out of your mind if you think that everyone thinks this album is a masterpiece, and you are even more out of your mind if you think this album is essential to any prog collection, because a great deal of prog collections don't contain jazz fusion.

DallasBrian is crying right now.

I should probably write a heck of a review for this album and rate it 4... this way overall ratings will be justified Wink... (damn, I have to write a sack of Can and Ash Ra Tempel reviews before plunging into it!!!)
Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)
