Reminded myself of the rock/jazz violinists data base many PA contributors have added to in the past (but surely it's time for additions) and is reproduced below - especially for newcomers unaware of its existence. I was reminded of it having spotted and bought Ed Alleyne Johnson's new album Reflections this lunchtime.

Alleyne-Johnson was discovered busking with violin and a heap of effects on a public street by members of the New Model Army. EA-J appeared on a couple of NMA's albums. However, since and over the last decade he had released a handful of solo albums demonstrating his violin playing abilities and an album featuring his now-wife. One of his eary albums was literally a solo recording of his violin rock concerto, the movements named after the colours of the spectrum - it is worthy of inclusion herer. However, until I listened to Reflections in the last few hours, I would have considered Alleyne-Johnson  output distinctly non-prog. It is not as if Reflections is completely prog, rather it is a covers album of his interpretations of a number of well known rock tunes. There are distinctly non-prog titles (e.g. Without You, Freebird, Parienne Walkways, Like A Hurricane). However, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Kashmir, and Child In Time as the longest tracks, do give A-J the chance to expand out. Evenso Kashmir is over-extended and mantra like, while Child InTIme is taken slow as Deep's original opening , compared with Its A Beautiful Day's violin mad-rush of the same Bach theme.

Reflections is a a pretty good album, although in the company of New Model Army, Alleyne Johnson sounded much tighter being permitted  just the right amount of space for his solos. Here on a couple of tunes I felt the soloing was overextended  to the point of become boring.

Contributions have come from a lot of folks through 2005, after I originally listed about 40 violinists (I guess around 18 months ago), so maybe whoever contributed that might like to fill in the details or we drop that fact off the "data base" for not being correct.

The title track.  However, the band drowns out the violin to the point of it being almost entirely inaudible.

Henry Lowther was also in Keef Hartley Band, where he also played trumpet.

I can't think of anymore...

Joe Venuti was a great 1930s jazz violinist.

The late Vassar Clements played fiddle with Dickey Betts from The Allman Brothers Band and he's dome a lot of session work as well.

Nick Pickett.

He played with Peter Green in his Fleetwood Mac days and was also in the John Dummer (Blues) Band.  He also released a solo album "Silversleeves" in 1972.

Since you hve included Marcus Viana at your list, maybe you can include Jorge Mautner (Brazilian poet, singer/songwriter - his work dates from early 70s) there. He does not play violin very often, but he surely can play it.
Here is a link to an incomplete discography:
You'll find a complete discography (sorry, it's written in Portuguese) at this link (as you can see, he often sports his violin at the album covers):
I don't know how to describe his musical style, he has elements of rock, jazz, Brazilian folk music, classical music... The list goes on. If you find a copy of "Bomba de estrelas", listen to it carefully, because it's probably his masterpiece.

(Almost absolutely) off topic: there are two typographical errors found --

1. Pater Hammill -- should be Peter Hammill;

2. Boud Deum -- should be Boud Deun.

Just for the sake of precision.

Thanks, I spotted them too (plus some inconsistent puncuation) and have corrected my personal master list but intend waiting  a sensible time before "uploading" instead  cluttering up the pages of PA with 3 long list within 24 hours.
