Topic: X-Legged Sally Posted: November 02 2006 at 19:58 |
So, since I last discussed this outstanding band on PA, have they gained any more followers here? I do truly believe they've created some of the most energetic, joyful, rousing and brilliant avant-prog ever. I simply cannot listen to them without grinning from ear to ear. I've found most of the people I've played them to, prog fan or otherwise, have either done the same or begged me to turn it off almost instantly. An interesting phenomenon, methinks. I'd love to see what would happen if I stuck them on at a crowded party... Anyway, X-Legged Sally. Any takers?

A short post. I have Slow Up, and I do not like it much.
But since Sean Trane recommended to me, I am willing to give more listens.
However, given that I know Slow Up, what other album do you recommend me trying?

Slow Up is probably their weakest effort (IMO), so I'm surprised Hugues recommended that one to you...
Personally I'd say "Killed by Charity" packs the biggest punch and acts as a good introduction to the band. "The Land of the Giant Dwarfs" is also excellent, but a little bit less focused (about twenty minutes longer, though). "Eggs and Ashes" is an odds-and-ends album that is therefore a bit more varied and has less of a complete "sound", which may or may not be a good thing for you.
...Go for "Killed by Charity" though. If that doesn't grab you then X-Legged's probably not your bag.

Thanks.
Just to rectify my previous post; Sean recommended me to try the band itself not that particular album.

Ya this band is really good, I can't remember which one but I was really amazed by one of their albums. They are really unique and interesting!

I listened to the samples on the site and I must say i am damned impressed.
I just can't find their albums anywhere for a reasonable price.

I really like the new signature image trouserpass I've never heard this group, can you describe their sound a little?

I have "Killed by Charity" (picked it up for 4.95!). It's quite good, nothing more, nothing less.

Thanks, VV! I guess if I had to put their sound into words... hugely energetic, unpredictable, quirky, playful uber-jazz-rock. Kinda. Really, they're a band to be heard, not described. Oh, by the way Zac M, you're wrong. Sorry.

I have only Killed by Charity and it's one awesome album. I think I posted it in "listening to now" thread surrounded by big round of applause emoticons and couple of people here shared my delight with this particular album in their reply posts.
This is great band (on the basis of one album I have). Looking forward to acquiring/learning more of them.

Consider yourself lucky to find them at all. I think most are out of print, and I am not sure Bang! (their label) will release them again.

There are samples on their page here on PA. When I first heard some samples I was blown away. But a while ago I listened to an entire album (The Land Of The Giant Dwarfs) and, to be quite frank, I got a bit bored. As with Fukkeduk (and 5uu's, to some extent), I think their sound is both a bit too dense and "formularic" for me. In a way, I feel as if they "fake" the playfulness in their sound... it's a bit hard to explain. It's as if they try to sound loose, but in fact they sound very rigid.

I said I liked it and that it was good , sorry if I offended! I'd give it something like 3-3.5 stars, it's good/great, but just nowhere near essential.

I was just listening to the sample from "The Land of the Giant Dwarfs" until I accidentally clicked away from the page. It sounds like great stuff, but I don't really think I'd want to listen to an entire album of it. Although I do enjoy the Rio genre, this sample appeared to lack something that I can't quite put my finger on. I shall listen to it a couple of times before making up my mind though. Thank you for bringing them to my attention Trouserpress.

Hmm...maybe I should reconsider then.

It's not like there are other ways to obtain the music...

Maybe you guys should review more of their albums rather then talking about them! All of their albums only have one rating and it's impossible to tell what's good from there.
