Surely Irish band Horslips are valid for inclusion to the prog
archives. the band existed originally from 1970 to 1980 and
has recently reformed to great acclaim here in ireland. they
fused traditional irish music with 70's rock and created such
masterpieces of prog as The Tain album. this is a concept
album based around the great irish myth of the Cattle Raid Of
Cooley. it is a truly magnificent concept album as is The Man
Who Built America, another concept album. all the bands work
was very progressive and is quite similar in style to jethro tull in
places. in my opinion they are thoroughly deserving of
submission into the prog archives. anyone agree> i think theres
no contest.

Ah yes, the Tain Bo Chuailgne.
Their most progressive lp.

With the newsgroup identity of Dearg Doom, Wallace opines that Horslips is THE band for you.

But Wallace would not bring up that atrocity, "The Man Who Built America". Too bad that the band who made the "Tain" later degenerated into this.

You dont speak of the companion lp to the Tain, "The Book Of Invasions" ('77). Not quite as strong, but good enough a lp.

The double live lp by Horslips is a must-get as well.

Ireland had precious few prog/progfolk bands -why is that?

The best of the lot are:
Fruupp
Mushroom -"Early One Morning"
Supply,Demand & Curve (the only Canturbury-sound band from the Shamrock Shore)
Peggy's Leg- "Grinilla"
Turner & Kirwan From Wexford

Joe O'Donnell -"Goadhal's Vision" is a good concept lp as well.

Shaun Davey -"the Brendan Voyage" is a fav of Wallace's .The lp mixes Ullelian (spelt incorrectly) pipes with symphony, etc. Can anyone comment on Davey's lps, "Granuaile" or "The Pilgrim"?

Gary Moore is Irish. His output is extremely patchy. The only lp which Wallace keeps for his collection is "Grinding Stone" ('73?)

And don't ever be a-callin' Van Morrison psyche! (Zappa too was uptightedly-opposed to dopers and the San Fran heads scene, but Zap were no Oyerishman.)

Top o' t'marnin' tae ye!

Some of the Horslips albums are more or less prog (as proggy as can be a folk-influenced album: it's something very difficult to be turned into prog). I also think it should be in the Archives.

Commenting on the other bands, I like Fruupp more or less (what does this name mean?). Not so much their first album, but I find 'Seven secrets' really beautiful, and I liked 'Modern Masquerades' even though it's not as well reviewed.

I listened to Mushroom once, although I didn't find them to be very progressive.

Howarya Dearg from the only other Irish progger
here. Hope you enjoy the site, it can get fairly fraught
and a bit argumentative and occasionally insulting -
a thick skin and talent for sticking to your guns are
musts - but then you're Irish so you should be fine.

Unfortunately I think I'm the only Irish progger who
dislikes Horslips intensely - just never got the taste
for them. But their inclusion is probably merited.

All in all, welcome!

^ arcer, if you want to count Irish Americans then you would be,as far as  I know,  one of three Irish proggers here.  Now, onto my question.  If anyone has MSN or AIM messenger(s) could you please send me some Horslips mp3s, I'm curious.

Yeh, listened to The Horslips. They're... ok in my book. That may be the Irish connection thing though! I'm not sure about them. I'll give 'em a few days.

Any Irish muscians out there wanna give it go? I'm sure we could come up with an Irish prog rock album that will blow them away. I'm a guitarist. Keyboards, bass, (have GREAT drummer, but if you wanna give it go!) and singer needed!!!

I'm only a baby I'm afraid! I'm 278 years younger than you!!!

But like John Keats' Grecian Urn, fantastic music transcends time! Recommend any good gigs coming up in Ireland (Dublin)? Got my Thin Lizzy ticket.

Blimey, last saw Lizzy with Philo in 1983/4? at the RDS, the last time they ever played in Ireland. Philo, Brian Downey, Scott Gorham, John Sykes and Darren Wharton, Thunder and Lightning tour I think. Amazing, brought a tear to the eye during 'Still in Love with You' when Philo thanked the crowd for their loyalty as the band bowed out. Another lifetime!

Nah haven't seen anything I'd be that interested in, aside from Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko and his quartet (superb jazz quartet). The last gig I was at was freebies to the Thrills at Christmas at the Point - just thought they were the Beach Boys for the ringtone generation.

your drummer any good?

im delighted that horslips have been added and am well
impressed at your knowledge of irish prog!! the musical legacy
of this country is generally pathetic but there definitely are
some moments of brilliance...ie Horslips!!!! oh and gallagher

Go on Rory!!
Hopefully we're getting a statue of a bronze Fender Stratocaster in Dublin's Temple Bar in honour of Mr. Gallagher.

Oh yeh. You'd kinda forget they're Irish now though! It's like they're an international band. I've nothing against U2. I like alot of their stuff. Achtung Baby was great. They are as popular here as anywhere I guess. Certainly not considered crap in my book anyway.

I think Pop is an underrated album.

to answer your question alan u2 are certainly not considered
crap in ireland by any stretch of the imagination. they are
incredibly popular here as they are everywhere else.
personally i don't rate u2 very highly really personally because
bono really gets on my nerves thinking that he's god and all
that and i despise the edges guitar style that said i guess they
are good ambassadors for ireland blah blah blah...ect. they just
lack the character of thin lizzy, the sheer musicianship and
passion of rory gallagher and the ingenuity and pioneering
fusion of horslips that's all. there was a time when i respected
them but i think they stopped progressing with the all that you
cant... album and just melted into bland radio fodder.

Are U2 considered crap in ireland? Well, opinions differ. They're just so overpopular. okay, okay, I admit it, i think they're crap, and i feel they have done Ireland a disservice in peddling such lazy music around the world.
