Chances are that if you live in the UK you have just missed  BBC 4 TV documentary Timeshift: Progressive Rock (10 pm Wednesday night)- which stated at its beginning 'to show whether prog was as bad as it has been made out'. Wheel in pundits Charles Murray Shaar (anti), the late John Peel (anti), Bob (boring) Harris (pro) and Stuart McConnie (pro), plus Paul Stump, (so called expert). Interesting footage long forgotten, of both the  usual suspects but add Can, Focus, Radiohead (and of course amones,Sham 69, Sex Pistols). Potted history with the usual inaccuracies, probably cramped and jumbled together to fit the 45 minute slot. The antis going on about "this wasn't rock'n'roll" - few prog fans pretended it was.......Tommy Vance narrating - totally wrong. Steve Hackett, Roger Waters and Bill Bruford providing the modern day perspectives. Plus young folks  of this time saying they are lookng for music which provides the complexity which is not offered by the main stream pop and rock.
Summary: best (or least worst) least anti-prog documentary yet - but still a long way to go (6/10). But not explanation why prog and its fans have been  so bad mouthed since the 70's?

And to complete 2 hours (nearly) of prog tonight on BBC 4, there is  repeat of Pete Frame's  Family Trees: Prog Rock. As soon as I was reminded John Peel was narrating the, I felt the hypocracy coming out of the TV and turned off - I'd seen it before and Krimson are hardly mentioned. I should add, that  I persisted and sat through a documentary on the Mark E Smith and the Fall  (one of Peel's favourite band) last week on BBC 4 - Peel's words expressing his enjoyment and reasons for the validity of the Fall's music, were just as abstract as those from people who enjoy prog rock, but the case for the Fall given here totally failing to convince me - Peel explanation needing those 'A Levels' which Peel claimed he needed for prog.

Knowing BBC 4 if you missed this, it'll be repeated two or three times in the next 7 days - check the programme listings of the TV channel.

Geesh  That sounds good. 

All we get in the States is Gene Simmons as a guest judge on American Idol. 

Even Paula Abdul made him look stupid.
