I don't know the purpose of this thread but as I saw that cover I realized how awful it would be not to recommend every living soul to get that cd. Is beautiful. The sensuality, the warmth, but also the musical pue beauty of brazilian music with jazz elements (of course marvelous bossa nova) has to be a staple in every one's collection.

Ironic that one of the huge influences of the bossa nova early guys was Stan Kenton's Progressive Jazz... in certain senses, bossa nova is progressive music but not prog-rock! I'll change the name of this thread... later I'll inform the starter.

This is the album (LP) that uplifted the bossa-nova movement:
 Elizete (or Elizeth) Cardoso (1920-1990) wasn't really a bossa-nova singer but a great dame of traditional samba, with a marvelous sweet voice. She was already a diva, nicknamed "A Divina" (The Divine) in 1958 when she recorded this album with songs by Jobim & Vinícius and having João Gilberto as guest and she gave authority to the new movement. I've been a Jobim fan since the early 70's, and was glad to see his full catalogue released on CD. It's NOT easy listening music!!!

I delved deeper into bossa nova for the first time in my life, I was very pleasantly surprised with artists like Bebel Gilberto and Toquinho.

Toquinho and his friend the poet & musician Vinicius De Moraes are among my favourite Brazilian artists. The records they recorded together are stunning.There are a lot of excellent compilations of their ckassic tracks.
 BTW Toquinho released in the 80s also a beautiful record, mainly sung in Italian 'Aquarello'.

and another classic by Jobim released on the Jazz label CTI, which shows (apart from his talent as a songwriter) his great talent as composer with influences by French Impressionist composers like Ravel & Debussy.

Bossa Nova Appreciation Thread
) students among them Joao Gilberto, who kind of invented the movement together with composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. This progressive movement, renewing with the popular samba tradition took in elements from Jazz music (syncopated rhythms against the binary samba rhythms) and sophisticated the popular Brazilian music. In the beginning of the 60's the colaboration of Gilberto & Jobim with US tenor sax player Stan Getz brought a worldwide success to the Bossa Nova music. Unfortunately nowadays 'Bossa Nova' is largely used as lounge music( I suppose outside of Brazil), but try to listen to it with prog ear and you will discover or rediscover the beauty and progness of Jobim's compositions, Gilberto's guitar playing, Getz's Sax, and Astrud Gilberto's voice.
