Topic: The deserted Island Dilemma Posted: January 19 2007 at 17:48 |
It's the age-old question that everyone fears to answer... The question that is more important than life or death (Thank you Bill Shankly) What if you were stuck on a deserted island (with the necessary facilities to listen to cds ), what would you choose as your 10-cd collection ! No cheating... Only 10. No compilation albums. Only PA-listed bands. Of course this list tends to differ as time goes by, but if I was asked to pick my collection NOW, the list would go like this (in no particular order) : - QUEENSRYCHE's Operation: Mindcrime
- YES' Close To The Edge
- RIVERSIDE's Out Of Myself
- JETHRO TULL's War Child
- SIEGES EVEN's The Art Of Navigating By The Stars
- MARILLION's Misplaced Childhood
- ANGLAGARD's Hybris
- OPETH's Damnation
- OZRIC TENTACLES' Spirals In Hyperspace
- GY!BE's Lift Your Skinny Fists...
Alright, there it is... Something heavy, something sweet Something serious, something completely wacko something old, and something, well not too old. So, what's your list ???

Well if I was stuck on an island with electricity and a sufficient stereo system, I'm pretty sure I would just hop on the A Train and ride back home
But anyways, I could answer that. Maybe I'll think about it, but just ten??
Oh gosh!

Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans
Pink Floyd - Meddle
Mostly Autumn - Passengers
Steve Hackett - To Watch The Storms

Dream Theater - SCORE
Dream Theater - Scenes From A Memory
Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
Genesis - Seconds Out
Yes - Yessongs
The Flower Kings - Stardust We Are

Now, if I only picked studio albums...
Rush - Permanent Waves

Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans
Transatlantic - Bridge Across Forever
Dream Theater - Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
The Flower Kings - Stardust We Are

I know what I like and I like what I know. I will choose a path that's clear, I will choose free will. If I die tomorrow, I`d be alright because I believe that after we`re gone, the spirit carries on.

As my music collection grows bigger and bigger, making "desert island
lists" becomes harder and harder. Right now I feel like bringing these
albums (in no particular order):
Univers Zéro - Ceux du Dehors
Zamla Mammaz Manna - Familjesprickor
Aka Moon - Aka Moon
Yes - Fragile
Art Zoyd - Symphonie pour le Jour Où Brûleront les Cités
Gentle Giant - The Power and The Glory
Høst - Hardt Mot Hardt
Magma - Attahk
Taal - Mister Green
Dün - Eros
The list could look very different tomorrow.

Does the system play mp3? Because if it did I'd stuff as much songs to 10 cds as possible. If not, oh well,
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
Jethro Tull - Stand Up
Dream Theater - Scenes From a Memory
Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow
Peter Gabriel - Up
Rush - Moving Pictures
Marillion - Misplaced Childhood
Caravan - In the Land of Grey And Pink
Camel - Camel
Wigwam - Being
And the stereo system better be good! Though I reckon there's a ship a-coming, so I wouldn't have to be there for long, but still, I'd take these, enough variety, not to get bored in one artist only.

If restricted to PA listed bands only (and in my case, it is restrictive), the usual suspects would be brought in Rush - Hemispheres Gentle Giant - Interview Led Zep IV Porcupine Tree - Deadwing Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here Ange - Emile Jacotey Harmonium - Harmonium Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden 10cc - Original Soundtrack XTC - Skylarking MInd you, I'd try & find a way to circumvent the limit & smuggle some AC/DC, Motorhead, Johnny Cash, SPlit Enz, Nick Lowe, Trust ... basically a thousand & one albums, as I can't stand listening to the same music all the time.

Gaston,
Did you JUST edit your entries? I was just going to give you a big 'thumbs up' emoticon for Dave Matthews Band's Before These Crowded Streets!!! I know, I know, it's only stuff that is prog and prog related; but, I hear a lot of progressive tendencies in their music. Especially "Don't Drink The Water", "Spoon", and "The Dreaming Tree". Man, I need to break that disc out more often.
