 Topic: Strawbs

I have always enjoyed these four albums that were released by Strawbs in the late 70's. Not most peoples favourite Strawbs era! But I am curious to see which the Strawbs enthusiasts rate highest out of these four albums.

All of these are a wee bit flawed, but I have a soft spot for Burning For You, because of the first track, and the over the top Alexander the Great. Deep Cuts has a couple of great tunes on it too. I believe I've reviewed all these.  later on...nope, I didn't review Deadlines...I coudn't think of anything nice to say about it.

Spot on Heptade, not their best releases by any means, but like you I thought "Burning..." was the best of these.

Of these records I only have Deep Cuts and the track Tokyo Rosie from Nomadness. Magic is desappeared, despite still some interesting tracks as Beside Rio Grande.
I like all their stuff I listened to, though, so I'm sure I will purchase all their classic output until Deadlines!

I have all four (Nomadness only on vinyl, of course; my Progressive Line boot CD made from a cassette sounds awful).... Deadlines has one good song (Words of Wisdom), Burning For You and Deep Cuts have a couple of good songs, but all three are marred by the production and arrangements. Nomadness has several GREAT songs (Golden Salamander, Hanging in the Gallery, & So Shall Our Love Die?), and is head and shoulders above the others. Incidentally, I emailed the Strawbsweb guy, asking him if the non-release of Nomadness on CD had to do with licensing issues or lost master tapes, and he said it was licensing. However, recently I bought an import compilation that had So Shall Our Love Die? on it (the only CD release of that song), and there's a drop-out near the end. So maybe it's not a licensing problem after all.

I think Cousins is probably holding back on Nomadness being released on CD until the timing is right....but if the masters ( which is what I heard in the early 90's) are deleted as in the A + M masters then there could well be a problem much bigger than licencing. I am also surprise to see ' So Shall Our Love Die?" being on a compilation.
I agree with you Soundsweird re Nomadness. A highly underrated album. I love all these four albums hence the poll to get a feel and I am surprised that Burning For You leads the polls at this stage.

Nomadness. The others a good and all, but I find Nomadness to be the better of the lot. If Brave New World was up there that would get my vote for best Strawbs ever.

Considering their standing among the Strawbs' work, I was pleasantly surprised to find many quality cuts in these albums. All are well worth checking out, as long as you can accept a band who kept "progressing" with their sound.
