"Lydia Purple" frae fairst lp been cover'd by mair tha' ain 70s psyche band.

Ah has fower o' five Collectors tracks tha weren't releas'd elseware. Good'uns too.

Dis band cum oot o' British Columbian town o' Chilliwack.
Tha's why dems later renamer'd demsells tae, Chilliwack.

Fairst two Chilliwack lps be daicent -sorta westcoast-rural psycherock. But t'remainder lp be fit fer t'gomeril brigade an' nought else.

Ah gots a trade lp copy o' second Chilliwack (2 lp set). Second lp o' dis set be raither innerestin' - lang, myterious instroomental tracks wiv a nod tae t'krautrock.

The Collectors, Grass and Wild Strawberrys is very good. Superb guitar playing, equalled by Chilliwack's second album.

Cool that you guys all know them! I just found it in my dad (not so extensive) vinyl collection!

And let me know what you think, mr. Chantraine... maybe they're something for the 'Archives!

I collect grass and wild strawberries - does that count?

Seriously - these sound intriguing. Can anyone find a copy of the album covers so I know what I'm looking for in the vinyl shops?

Joren,

Just listened this WE to both their albums.

Both are killer psych rock (along with SRC and Spirit), much deserving inclusion on this site.

Bedankt, jonge!

After having listened to the Collectors for the last few months , I have asked M@X and Ron to put up their two albums in the Archives.

The first eponymous album (68) has five short songs on side A and a side-long suite and is absolutely great. If you can picture a cross of Moody Blues and Vanilla Fudge with a pinch of Spirit , "un soupcon" of SRC and some tremendous inventivity ala Jefferson Airplane and HP Lovecraft (the group , not the writer). The 19 min What Is love is stupendous music full of searing guitars , saxes and flutes.
Yes , they do sound like the Moody Blues but also SO MUCH MORE!!!!!!!

The second is Grass and Wild Strawberries is a concept album (69) based on a play. Full of catchy songs with good hooks . All tracks are kept fairly short , but are clearly linked by the storyline and is definitely worth the spin.

Both albums got a release on LINE A label in the early 90's , likely to be out of print today . To my knowledge , the vinyls are not too expensive. They also had a compilation album (called Seventeenth Summer ) of recordings in the 70's but I will only manage to hear it in a few weeks. That one never got a Cd release.

Without Joren , I probably would've never been reminded about this group!

THANKS, JOREN!

Attention ladies and Gentleman, after almost 18 months wait

a Chantraine - Van Ree (ST and Joren) production

THE COLLECTORS

 The Collectors band's picture
Genre : Proto-Prog
Country : Canada

THE COLLECTORS biography
When one thinks of Canadian prog rock, the 70’s Quebec scene (Harmonium, Maneige etc…) pops up first to mind along with the Toronto scene (Rush, Saga, Max Webster etc.) and one can eventually think of the Guess Who/BTO connection from the central Prairie Provinces (not really prog but classic anyway), but never of the west coast. Alongside Ptarmigan (one sole stupendous hippy prog folk), The Collectors (hailing from Vancouver) might just be the first full-blown progressive group of the country, but they are also Canada’s best-kept secret.

These guys started recording a few singles (managing modest but real national success) as soon as 66, but really came on their own when they recorded their first Lp (self-titled) with a superb Art-Nouveau psychedelic artwork. Simply put, this is a masterstroke and they managed with an astounding aplomb and self-confidence that was highly unusual for 68. The only way to describe this incredible record is a mix of THE MOODY BLUES, sprayed with a good dose of VANILLA FUDGE and a cloud of HP LOVECRAFT. Sounds intriguing? Ya betcha!!!! Five tracks on the first side of the vinyl as a starter and the piece de resistance, the 19min+ What Love to finish (no need of desert, you’ve had enough with that).

Their second album is a full-blown ecological concept album called Grass And Wild Strawberries and the tracks are all linked and the lyrics written by writer George Ryga. The group has for a spine Claire Lawrence on winds and vocals and Bill Henderson on vocals, guitars and keyboards. But the Lead singer was Howie Vickers.

Feeling that their name was not doing them any favour (cannot blame them as it sounds like an early RnR group), they changed their name to Chilliwack, producing a few albums – gradually less progressive and more mainstream, before calling it a day by the end of the 70’s. By that time almost everyone had forgotten their superb progressive start.

Why this artist must be listed in www.progarchives.com :
Just discover it and you'll understand!!!

Discography:
- THE COLLECTORS – 68
- Grass And Wild Strawberries – 69

Thanks to Sean Trane for the addition and JOREN for verifications

It looks like the co-producer  should say something! Well, I still haven't heard their second album, but their first is nice stuff! I heard some samples of their second, and it sounded promising. Maybe I'll order them both on CD once.

Check them out people, if you are into early psychedelic rock music!

Edit: If you'd like a taste, listen to the realaudio file on this website (on the right):
http://www.vpro.nl/programma/zeldzamewissel/afleveringen/199 22020/

It's a Dutch tv program, but if you skip the talking, you can listen to several songs from them!
