I was listening to Pink Floyd the other day and found myself enjoying at very much.
Today I played "Crime of the Century" by Supertramp and I enjoyed that also.
I started thinking to myself who do I prefer out of Pink Floyd and Supertramp ?

I started wondering what the  prog rock community on this site thought  ?

Which will it be Supertramp or Pink Floyd  ?

Can' Decide ?  don`t worry you are not alone , I also can`t decide,  your feedback on why you can't decide would be appreciated .    Smile

Supertramp.  For one reason only - Roger Hodgson has an uncanny ability to explore the depths of despair and of the Struggle, but in the end he never loses sight of what is the most critical element (see below).   Pink Floyd's music is absolutely brilliant, but they don't have that same vision.

For me PINK FLOYD easily.Although if were talking albums,"Crime of the century" rivals some of FLOYD's best.I'm not sure where i'd put it though, maybe after "DSOTM" and "Wish you were here".Tough choice between "The wall" ,"Animals" and "Crime of the century".

As I was listening to Supertramp today one of the things I noticed that I loved was the emotion Roger Hodgson displays with his voice , I liken it to early Genesis in a way  and I see that as brilliant also I love the lyrics.
Pink Floyd on the other hand I believe are great in their own way  , Roger Waters maybe lost the plot a little with the daddy's gone business on the wall and the final cut ,  but the man can pen some fine lyrics and sing them very well.

Pink Floyd, this bands cant simply be compared, they are veru different, and pink floyd is much better, I respect supertramp, and I considered it a very good band, but I think is completely absurd to compare them with Pink Floyd, just that

While I prefer Supertramp to Pink Floyd (not by much, but still), Pink Floyd is one of those groups that can objectively be called top tier. Sales wise, they are among the top 10 of all time. Mind you, it doesn't hurt to have two of the best selling albums of all times with DSOTM & the Wall. Personally, if & when I listen to the Wall, I use my CD player's remote a bit as the "concept" songs (the Worms for example) don't excite me much, but the album does contain many classic tracks. Supertramp, on the other hand had a great run at the end of the 70s, & while their albums sold very well, none can really match the "legendary" status of DSOTM. That said, Supertramp does get a good share of play on my CD, as many of their songs, especially Rick Davies' best are among my favorites.

Supertramp. because there is no Roger Waters for one thing. Supertramp has much more emotive singing imo. Waters has some emotion but its always the same one. The most important reason I have to vote for  Supertramp though is music structure. They do a much better job of  having the instruments augment each other. PF does it pretty well some of the time but some of the time they fail. Most of the time PF instruments are doing great things but they are not really helping each other achieve the sound of the song.

Supertramp is one of my faourite artists, so my choice is clear.

obviously going by the numbers Supertramp only released 5 good albums, of which only 1 can  be called a masterpiece and Pink Floyd can count in with 7 good al;bums of which 3 can be consideed a masterpiece, but according to me Crime Of The Centurie surpases everything Pink ever creaed, and their second besst bunch equals the enjoyment I get from the best Pink albums.

I love them both, but PINK FLOYD is synonym of Prog Rock, and SUPERTRAMP... well... I think they are more Pop than Prog... and when Roger Hodgson quit the band... they were never the same.... (I like more his solo albuns than Supertramp works without him).

I think at their best Pink Floyd is better than Supertramp, but Supertramp are the better overall band.

I doubt this will be a very close result though. I feel a big disappointment for me coming.

Pink Floyd began in the psychedelic London underground. Their roots are in making music for "the cause", being part of the esoteric genre they are so famous for. They developed from there on.

Supertramp are a commercial band that began in THE most contrived possible way. Yes, some of their early work is progressive inspired, but also F.M. radio inspired. Supertramp was a band ASSEMBLED for success. A band that eventually reached the aspirations of it's creater. Although, too late.

Having a song played on FM doesn`t take anything away from the artist,  being a huge Kansas fan I constantly seem to have this disagreement with other proggers.
Besides Floyd have had their fair share of FM radio friendly tunes.

To be honest I've only heard (and own) Crime of The Century... Pink Floyd I know much better, and I also like much more.... No comparison for me.
