Two bands from the Canterbury Scene, which do you prefer?

I tend to like National Health better

Hatfield and the North might be my favorite Canterbury act so my vote goes to them.

RIP in bossa nova heaven.

I haven't heard enough to judge but I don't like how you grouped it with not liking either so I refuse to vote for some reason. And I won't be hypocritical and vote. I simply am exercising my right to invade a poll and make no contribution at all! Evil%20Smile

Okay I'll bite. Once I am done drolling over the new Rush release. I refuse to buy anything else until then. And I will never stop listening to Rush! Never! At least one album every day!

Which one should I pick up for a good starter album?

Their albums are way more difficult to get into than Rush but grab either of their 2 albums and they'll destroy any Rush you'll have ever heard. Wink

I can laugh.. I used to be just like you..  now I hardly touch them...

I've seen polls about evenly split... take your AR team leaders.. Raff loves Rotters Club and I love the S/T debut.  Can't go wrong with either.

so when are you moving to Canada anyway LOLWink

I was actually thinking of moving to Canada (seriously, for University or something)

I'll be sure to find an album. Maybe I should go to Canterbury and find a used record store there to buy it. Might make the experience more special.

I like them equally, and little wonder it is. the only difference between them is the bass player (and singer, but the singing was never the most important part for me with either of the bands, though some of the lyrics are quite enjoyable and silly)

I adore both of them! I can't decide whether I should vote for Hatfield or NH, actually I like them equally. They created timeless and unique music that doesn't deserve to be overlooked and neglected. By the way, I highly recommend other Dave Stewart related bands, particulary Egg and Bruford. Thumbs%20Up to you guys!

Yes, I am living proof of that....Angry  Says one who listens to Dee-Lite, Barbra Streisand and other such musical delights!TongueWinkLOL

*starts figuring out ways to retaliate*

Back IT, I love both bands, but if I have to choose, then my vote would go to the Hatfields because of the presence of Richard Sinclair. He's one of my all-time favourite singers, and his voice often gives me goosebumps. In my opinion, National Health are a bit harder to get into - however, their debut album features another big favourite of mine, the dazzling "Tenemos Roads".

NH's second, 'Of Queues and Cures', is also cut above and one of the best of the Canterbury offerings.

The Hatfields were definitive Canterbury-- prefer Rotter's Club but first album good too.

I totally agree. I would even go one step further and add that it's one of the very best classic prog albums, every inch as enjoyable and original as CLOSE TO THE EDGE, A PASSION PLAY, OCTOPUS or SELLING ENGLAND!
