Stevie Wonder had great vision on Talking Book and Innervision. George Duke wasnt bad either. Sly Stone, Herbie Hancock and Steely Dan are good examples as its a funky instrument. Kerry can play anything with anybody I personally had an in house experience with his playing at a gathering back in the early 80s he was visiting a friend doing some dabbling(friend had worked with Moebius and Roedelius previously)and we got to listen to him play in home studio and on steinway baby grand. Will never forget that night!

Hard to say. Rick sure ripped it up on "Ice Run." Keith did likewise on "Nutrocker." Chick and Herbie both play a mean clav. Billy Preston's "Outa-Space" is a classic clav-oriented jam. I just know I can't get enough CLAV!!!!

basically Hohner Clavinet is a keyboard used to control the sound output of electric guitar. Try using a Gretsch 6120 for some interesting wah-wah! It can be heard in progressive rock on Gentle Giant - Free Hand and some middle period Van der Graff. It is best used in a funk environment but though prehistoric to the sequencer could create rhythmic textures, flanger and reverb. This sound is now accessed by ePiano Midi controller or electro module.

Can't get better than Stevie W. (for instance, "I Wish"). Rufus had an amazing clavinet-er, but I have no idea what his name was.
Though I do have a soft spot for "Trampled Underfoot" and the last part of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond".
Wasn't there a cool clavinet sound on Sinnead O'Connor's "Jerusalem" too? It's been so long I've forgotten it.

Minnear. I know I claim he's the greatest keyboardist full stop, but
surely one cannot doubt his clavinet prowess? Though RichardW's
perfectly correct - the man is an utter genius. I've never understood
why he's never recorded any solo material. I'm sure it'd be fab.

The new music on the 'Giant On The Box' DVD is stunning. I wish he'd release some of that material. It's Gentle Giant through and through, but sounds so fresh.

A Rickenbacker bass can be tuned to mimic the clavinet sound.

I'm in rather a financial black hole at present so it could be a LONG while before I get to see that DVD.

Actually, what sounds in the Godbluff album is the RMI electric piano, not the Hohner clavinet. The RMI was also used by Tony Banks (71-78), Rick Wakeman (71-78 in Yes, 72-81 solo), Dave Lawson in Greenslade, Taff Freeman in Nektar, Keith Emerson on the first two ELP albums,...
Minnear was the one who was pretty much into teh clavinet, and so was Kit Watkins (HTM), at times Kerry Livgren (Kansas), and also Jan Hammer (Mahavishnu Orchestra).
Regards.

The one and only Stevie Wonder used the clavi better than anyone!
though whoever played for Sly and the Family Stone did a pretty good job
Always liked its presence on Floyd's 'Shine On'
and John Paul Jones plays killer Stevie W-inspired clavi on Trampled Underfoot from Physical Graffiti
