Topic: Do Make Say Think (Experimental journey VII) Posted: March 12 2007 at 07:19 |
I'm finally back at trying experimental/post-rock bands, after a forced hiatus of I don't know how long. I've chosen a good harvest of an active band, given also (in a bit of reason) their latest album of 2007, which I meant to try asap, the band therefore of Do Make Say Think.
What am I to expect of it?

Top shelf post rock. One of my favourites of the genre.

Agreed. Good choice Rico! All their albums are very much worth it, the debut perhaps being slightly less significant IMO. I'm too lazy to give a proper description of their sound, but suffice to say, they're one of a kind and easily one of the best bands in the genre.

One of the best bands in the genre! They never repeated themselves since their debut, although I haven't heard their lates album... yet. Their first one is very chilled out and very trippy. There are some great groovy songs, but I think its better to let this one for last Their second one is my favorite of them all. It's very minimalistic and it has a wonderful atmosphere. There are more horns in this release than in their debut and it's more aggressive than their other releases. Their third album is and odd one. It doesn't go anywhere and they play the same tune from start to finish. I don't mean this in a bad way. It's very hypnotic for the same reasons I already mentioned. I suggest you read Moattiliatta's review. Their fourth is the most playful of them all. It's very varied in sounds. It's energetic, melodic and highly original IMO. I think this is the best place to start with them. The new album? Well, I have to buy it first. Sorry for being short on the info. I'm doing some heavy school work and I shouldn't even be posting in the forums!

Don't expect it to sound like GY!BE or Mogwai. Great band though, my favourite Post-Rock band.

I've listened up to now to Godspeed You Black Emperor! (sound vision and musical escathology) A Silver Mt. Zion (music of tierful sadness, dystopic tastes) 65daysofstatic (bash, boom, voom, grugde, dedicate hardball) Explosions In The Sky (crystal guitar lush on vibrations, echoes, the bunch...) Bell Orchestre (orchestral craze) Magyar Posse (anvergure post) Gastr Del Sol (pure experimentalism and hard nucleus forms) God Is An Astronaut (shoegaziness on voom melody) I think I know some difference by now, as to not raport everything to singlehandedly Godspeed. (ah, and by excluding Godspeed and Silver Mt., Do Make Say Think is actually my seventh experimental journey...my bad)

You remember about that? In my language we call such people "of evil memory" (maybe there's a better way to put it). You could have blamed Ruben too though.

I like the sound of that. (evil memory) Ruben redeemed afterwards. He's actually among the certain people to give me some impressions on these threads I make and these suggestions I ask for.

All of their albums are wonderful (the first one less so....). The new one is fantastic, definitely one of my favorites. They're probably my favorite post rock band, well of what I've heard.
