   Not many threads about this great Dutch band. I love the music of The Gathering, especially the post Mandylion (including this album) era. I also like their debut - gothic-doom album, I know; the second album is pretty good, but that's all i can say I'm afraid. What came next up to our days is brilliant  - to me at least. Another thing I admire about this band is that they're not afraid to experiment and add new elements to their music.
 
   What is your opinion about The Gathering?

ahhh... before yesterday I wouldn't have had a clue.. but Raff picked up an album Mandylion Friday and I listened to it yesterday. Prog-Metal that an classic prog fanatic/elitist can sit through.  Nice vocals... and the music wasn't bad at all.

i know that Mandylion and Nighttime Birds are considered atmospheric metal masterpieces but i'll go with How To Measure A Planet? and Souvenirs..

by the by, i'm totally opposed to their inclusion in PA..

Michael, you should try also what comes after that album, especially How to Measure a Planet?. But knowing you, don't go backwards in the discography.
Curiously enough, if you wish to hear how a doomdeath song sounds in an acoustic version, then pick Sleepy Buildings - A Semi Acoustic Evening and listen to:
The Mirror Water  & Stonegarden from their first album Always (which I love).

Some of the most beautiful vocals I've ever heard. It took me a while to really get into them, because I was looking for the wrong things in the music. I too love the later era of the band. Continually evolving their sound, and always with good results.

well, their first two LPs are doom/death metal, all the way, the next two are atmospheric metal with female vocals and the last four are something between space/ambient/trip hop rock.. i just don't see it...

fair enough to me....  I don't pretend to understand the whole nature and appeal of the sub. I try listening with an open mind and ear... but it really doesn't sound all that prog to me. Oh well...time for dessert... I'm out...

Mandylion is great, Nighttime Birds I haven't heard yet, and How to Measure a Planet I find hard to get into - especially the title track is more of collection of noises. What comes after apparently progresses form there, so I might like it less. And I visited their home town on Friday, to bad I didn't run into them... Wink

    I was surprised to see them listed as prog (metal) myself; but still i think it's not my concern to judge that. All in all, great band!

well, Nighttime Birds is kind of like Mandylion II only inferior and i'd have to agree with that 'noise thing' although the rest of the material is excellent.. i would recommend you "Souvenirs".. haven't heard the last one...

Anneke is one of my favourite female vocalists, if not the most.  For me, their latest album Home is the best. Mature, atmospheric and trippy, dark though angelic. But I also like a lot of their previous stuff.

Picked up the album Mandylion yesturday, its a great bit of atmospheric metal. I have to admit I would hesitate at calling everything on this album prog, though a few songs are quite definitely that and they have progressive touches in most of the songs.

Good band, lovely vocals, must find more from them.

Mandylion and Nighttime Birds are great atmospheric albums with progressive elements ... if you want prog, listen to How to Measure a Planet, Souvenirs and Home. It's more "Post Metal" than traditional Prog Metal though ... the difference is a little bit like the difference between Prog Rock and Post Rock.
