 Topic: Steve Hogarth vs Phil Collins

This Poll has an obvious answer but some people don`t like him much (for their own reasons) and will probably vote the other way in spite... lets see how it goes .. should be interesting

May seem surprised by my vote, but I went for Collins. I thought both were pretty important to their respective bands, but Genesis had a lot more to lose when Gabriel left.
You will have to admit, however, that although both bands became less progressive (one a lot more than the other), Marillion have pretty much maintained their own route;whilst Genesis took the route to get that ever elusive hit.
Tough decision as I feel both were/are very important to their bands.

Phil Collins. As well as bringing an interest in jazz and soul to the group, his voice and drum sound and style was a vital part of the Genesis sound. Even in the Gabriel years, his backing vocals were prominant and instantly recognisable.

I abstain. I don't really care that much for Hogarth overall, even though, paradoxically, I enjoy much of Marillion's work with him singing it. Odd.
Phil has my support, though he has done his best to destroy my faith! Still, he's a great singer and will always be, no matter how crappy the material gets.

Collins, despite the fact that they became more Pop music in style since 1978. He at least respected the style of the band for several years, and his voice is similar to Gabriel`s. If I remember well, Banks or Rutherford said in the "Genesis-A History" video that Fans probably forgave Collins as replacement for Gabriel as lead singer because "anyway he was a member of the band before Gabriel left", so he wasn`t a "stranger" like a new member could have been. He also sang several songs with or without Gabriel in their albums as quintet, so many fans knew that he had a good voice and that he could be a lead singer for the band. Maybe that made things easier for him with some of the old Fans. Their more Pop albums still had some good Prog arrangements in some songs. They still sounded like "Genesis" in some things.
Hogarth, in contrast, has a very different voice from Fish`s. When he sings songs like "Kayleigh" the songs don`t sound as good as when Fish sang them, IMO. He was an "outsider", but his first album with the band, called "Seasons End", was still good, IMO, because most of the music was composed when Fish still was in the band and the style of the music is still like the "old Marillion`s music". Hogarth contributed a very good song like "Easter" which was mostly composed by him with the rest of the band members adding the "Marillion`s sound" to it. In contrast, "Holidays in Eden", their next album and their first fully composed album with Hogarth, showed clear changes in the style of the band, influenced more by Hogarth`s more Pop music style. I think that since then Marillion increasingly became Hogarth`s band. I stopped buying their albums after "Holidays in Eden". I`m not interested in their music anymore.

I don't have problems with Steve Hogarth, but the contribution of Phil Collins to prog masterpieces is more significant. A great drummer and i have no big issues with his voice, maybe he should keep himself away from some Gabriel classics.
True that Collins has serous flaws, but this doesn't invalidate his best performances.

Even if I am a devoted fan of Marillion and Hogarth I have to agree with most of you and vote for Phil Collins. He has been important for Genesis since he joined the group both as a drummer, composer and a vocalist. Genesis is a bigger band and have played for ages so Collins has to be more important than H.

I vote for PA's favorite teddy bear, Phil Collins. he was the drummer of arguably the greatest band in the history of prog and played great drums in their best albums; he took charge of the vocals when Gabriel left, and for two albums he delivered the goods. then, after Hackett left, he still delivered two great albums, and then the 80's came and the interest for prog wasn't that big anymore and he and the two ther guys decided to pop their music a little. Four uneven albums, with a couple atrocious songs (Illegal Alien, Who Dunnit) but with a few good songs, also. And as a solo artist, he has delivered countless pop hits that will stand the test of time as they are actually GOOD. Some of his music is a little bit... terrible.. ... but what the hell, that's what he likes, and in every album he releases we can expect at least a couple very good honest pop tracks.
Hogarth.... singer of Marillion. He sung in what is to me Marillion's best album (Brave), and then helped the band down the path of boredom (even AOS I don't like that much)... He didn't create Marillion, he wasn't a part of the BEST Marillion... He has been a part (maybe not to his fault) of the WORST Marillion, he has let his voice go down the drain......
Is there really any comparison?

Both of these guys have been criticized by certain forum members in the past so I put this poll together to illustrate a point . Peter Gabriel and Fish are two of my most admired people in prog .. both of these guys rolls were replaced by people in the poll .. that term "replacement" I honestly want to find out from forum members which person was the best replacement. I knew it would be Phil Collins in my opinion anyway , but I do think this poll is a valid poll and the question does deserve an answer.
