Hi,

Is Stratovarius prog or just a good hard rock/metal band?
I am thinking about buying some cd's. Can anybody help me out?

Thanx! Smile

More like power metal with progressive tendencies.  They are one of the few power metal bands I'll listen too.  If you like Ynqwie Malmsteen neo-classical type power metal then you'll most likely dig Stratovarius.  The keyboard player from Malmsteen plays on Strat's later and better releases.

Jens Johansson is that keyboard player, and indeed a listed artist here in PA. I've tried with Stratovarious - couple of albums, DVD - but  don't like them. I keep wondering why a major keyboard player sounds so mediorce with them (if you want reference points check out Jen's wonderful solo discography) - I presume its for the pension.

There's a small movement that asks for their inclusion in PA, and I'm ready to jump on that ship... Even though their latest (Elements) is weak, they have some good album with progressive tendencies, I don't know if they are true prog but close... If you hear Sonata Arctica's latest, UNIA, that's true progressive-metal, but the rest of their output is power metal; Blind Guardian deserves to be here, just for NIGHTFALL... But Stratovarius can't be here unless other finnish band that started as death metal and developed into a more hard-rock proggy outfit with hawkwind elelemts is here...AngryAngry

I was listening to their latest release yesterday, the self titled "Stratovarius"
It is incredibly boring!!
I also can´t understand why such talented musicians play this kind of music

Thanx all for the advice.
Suppose I will try one album. Which one should I try??

Also, an other band which came up: Edguy. A friend of mine gave me the advice to listen to them. He knows I'm prog related. So is Edguy (a little) prog related??

Edguy are not prog, but you might want to try Avantasia (a side project by Sammett). Still not really prog, but related.Wink

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson
