UK tour by Caravan is CANCELLED
Richard Coughlan is unwell again and will not be fit to play

It is with great regret that the proposed autumn UK tour has been cancelled. Drummer Richard Coughlan has had a recurrence of his arthritis, that has rendered him unfit to play. He is understandably very upset about this, as it puts huge question marks about his ability ever to play live with the band again.

Doug Boyle, the lead guitarist has also stated that he is unavailable. On this basis Pye Hastings felt it impossible to find a new guitarist and drummer in time, taking into account the time involved in finding suitable replacements and rehearsing for around two weeks with new band members.

Pye Hastings said, 'I was so looking forward to being back on the road, but with all of this it's just not practical. I am not prepared to go on tour unless the standard is as at least as good as it's always been. I just couldn't guarantee that. We all feel for Richard- it is so hard for him.

I am writing new material and want to be on the road in the spring next year. Richard accepts that we will probably need a new drummer, so we will have time to take account of the new situation. In any case Richard would be welcome to come along and play percussion. Expect him to contribute on any new Caravan recordings. Just to say, don't give up on us, as we will be back.'

Fortunately, Pye Hastings said: "Don't give up on us, as we will be back." So all is not lost...

And there were times when they were healthy but could not afford touring and recording because of lack of contract or publicity or times when they did not want play with each other....

Pity. The tour did look in some doubt anyway, due to the whole financial logistics issue.

Such a shameCry  probably my favourite live band.

Can I be the first to wish Richard Coughlan the very best, he must be quite down at the moment and as a true Caravan fan I am more concerned that one of the original members health is fine.

That's horrible! I was looking forward to being able to seem them. Hopefully Richard gets better so maybe they could try to tour again.

get well soon RC!! I'm sure the bloody rain down Herne Bay way does not help. Pye reckons they will involve RC whatever happens when recording a new album as he always has been an integral and original member of Caravan. Never missed an album to be sure.
