So I've been whistling this melody for the last 8 hours, but I can't place the song!  It kinda sounds like something Oliver Wakeman or Arjen Antnhony Lucassen would write (but I've gone through most of their stuff without any luck.)

SongTapper.com tried to tell me it was "Over and Over Again" from Nelly Ouch  Here's an attempt at playing the melody:

That is a remarkably non-catchy melody. How on earth did you get it stuck in your head? Anyway, I'll fix it. Ahem.

This is the song that never ends / cause it goes on and on my friends / some people started singing it not knowing what it was / and now they'll keep on singing it forever just because / this is the song that never ends etc.

It's gone now, isn't it?

I have to agree, thats not very catchy. Try the Carpet Crawlers err something.
