It's tough to pay attention to his home runs now when he's striking out at a prodigious rate AND top that off with a sub-.200 batting average.  I mean, all players go through slumps, but this is going on a month and a half, and I wish his batting average would go up, but it isn't.  Though it's early, it seems like he'll be the first player to crack 200 Ks....  Ermm

Yea, it doesn't help that the Flyers are down 2-0 either.... Pinch

But the Phillies are still having a good season, Ryan Howard's stats aside.  Utley and Burrell each had a great April, even though Burrell is coming back down to earth recently.

The team can be entertaining to watch at least.  Wish Rowand was still on board, though.

yeah, I caught the cards/brew game tonight and couldn't believe how short and fat Fielder was. He reminded me of Kirby Puckett but fatter.

The funniest thing about Fielder's weight is that he's on a diet right now; he became a vegetarian a few months ago.

Well the Cubs are looking at Jim Edmonds. The comments posted on the story from the Cardinal fans is hilarious. They are throwing the guy under the bus. Wasn't it the Cards that decided they didn't want to pay him any longer?

Got to see the Pirates lose to the Cards....Got to hear all about Jim Edmonds how both the Cards and Cubs fans are up in arms about the signing of him. It is like the guy didn't have a career before he got to the Cards. He did play for the Angels if I remember right.

Has anybody else read Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis?  It's a brilliant book.  It talks about how Billy Beane and the hapless Oakland A's managed to win their division several years in a row, while every year having the lowest or second-lowest payroll in baseball.  Probably the best book ever written on baseball; Bill James has a couple books up there as well, but they're not nearly as accessible.

Billy Beane is a great GM. He has been blessed with talent but like many small marker or teams that don't want to play the high salaries he gets to be a training/minor league team for the big market clubs, I wish that they could have gone to the WS the year that they played the Yankees in the playoffs.

on another note.....I got to see the Cards piss away a 5-1 lead to lose to the Buccos 11-5. Great game that it was. I got to hear the Cards announcers ramble on about the importance of getting a lead on a team like the Pirates. It tends to get them down. Heh heh heh.....I hate announcers that are blatant homers for the team.

I haven't read Moneyball myself, but I've heard a lot of good things about it.  Billy Beane makes some amazing trades.  He got Dan Haren and Daric Barton out of the Mark Mulder trade, and then got six players out trading Haren to the D'Backs, including several high ranking prospects in their system.  I'm amazed he got the two best pitching prospects and the best position prospect from the White Sox in the Swisher deal.  There's too much talent in these trades for them to be unsuccessful.

A player to watch. The Dodger have a pitch named Clayton Kershaw in their AA system. He has a 97 mph fastball and a mean 12 to 6 curveball. The kid is 20 and there are comparisons to Koufax about him. Vin Scully has already nicknamed his curve "Public Enemy #1".

Holy sh*t Chipper Jones is good.  I have him on my fantasy team and EVERY TIME I check a box score he's 2-4 or 3-4 with a run or an RBI.  He's already a hall-of-famer for sure, but if he keeps hitting well like this for another year or two he could make himself into a first-ballot hall-of-famer.
