Funny, I don't like Seven all that much but really like Revolutions.  Of course, Revolutions is more of a 70's prog tribute than anything else, and is almost entirely the work of Rob Reed.  Seven and Home are the ones that seem to show the actual sound of Magenta as a band.  I haven't heard Home yet.

Home is a grower and quite a departure from Seven in concept.  Shorter songs, telling one story over the course of the album.  A lot more slower passages and some uniques songs that are a bit of a departure from their tried and true.  Christina really sings a lot on the album and does a fantastic job.  It took a few listens but the last time it really clicked.

I think the reason Magenta are not huge is that they essentially fall between two stools. Their music is not catchy enough to qualify as pop and not complex or adventurous enough to quality as prog (except of the neo variety).

I look everywhere, yet I cannot find Seven. I have been looking for about 6 months now. Perhaps that is why they aren't huge. (Not like it's easy to find Flower Kings albums either though).
Prog... It's good.

I buy my cd's from kinesiscd.com and lasercd.com here in the states and they both have Seven.  Laser has tons of FK as well.  I can easily recommend both outlets as being easy to use and work with.

In have Home with the New York Suite. o be honest I find it rather boring and dull, more a series of abnormally long pop songs with a unifying concept rather than a proper neo prog album. The few songs I have heard from Seven and Revolutions are considerably better, though, IMO.

Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

I think that the curse of many smaller prog bands is that they have a decent audience when you count every fan world-wide, but not enough fans are concentrated in any one place to really tour effectively and play a lot of shows.

If there was justice VdGG would be playing Las Vegas every night with people having to book for the show half a year in advance. Not that they would ever do that, by the way; Peter Hammill hates standing still, and playing Las Vegas every night he would definitely regard as standing still.

On my one-man campaign against crap snare drumming. Magenta are yet another group who cannot control their snare drumming. Seven would be such a superb album if it wasn't for the crap snare which IMHO totally spoils it.

I think you hit the nail on the head Bob. That is exactly what i think. They are a very good band, and Christina has loads of charisma, but they lack originality. But, as you said, that does not mean they aren't enjoyable.

Infandous, I know exactly when you left the NEARfest show. It did get a little tedious in the middle. The rest of the set was fantastic. If they had kept the same level throughout their performance, they would have had my vote for best band of day one. However, they weren't able to top Izz.

I discovered Magenta with their DVD The Gathering and it was something like love at first sight.

For me, who likes light and melodic prog, Seven is a dream of an album. Revolutions was great too. Home and their last single Speechless were more of a disappointment because they are leaning towards a more mainstream direction. Anyway, you may not like Christina's voice but I think that Rob Reed's talent as a composer is unquestionable.

I have often been doubtful about the band's marketing choices, though. Why so many EP's ? The Night and Day one, with three versions of the same (average) song, doesn't seem a good idea to me, to say the least. With all the material of their EP's and singles, they could have made up an entire album. But I guess they have their reasons.

I wonder if they sell more albums than Mostly Autumn, that IMHO can be put in the same sub-category : light and melodic progrock with female voices.

People who like those two bands should also check out the first album of  The Reasoning, a band initiated by Magenta's former bassplayer.

Perhaps they had average-sized human parents, and are well past their initial pubescent growth spurts? Ermm

Shocked Now Giant Sloths -- they were huge on the pleistocine prog scene:

Approve Here I am with the bass player at a big rock concert....

Geek Seriously though, human giganticism is not feasible from an evolutionary/biological perspective. The massive skeletal structure and spinal cord required, along with the tremendous demands on the heart, plus the enormous dietary requirements (not to mention resultant rapid bodily heat loss due to possessing such a large surface area) render extreme size in the unfurred human organism  an evolutionary dead end. By contrast, the pygmies of central Africa (continued on pg 213)

I second you on that point even if they lack a great vocalist IMHO. Would their album be on this site (which it deserves), I would give it a solid four stars !
