Is Lunar Sea by Camel, on the Moon Madness album, the best progressive rock instrumental track? I'm trying to think of one that is better, to no avail. There are some great instrumental passages, but I'm thinking of instrumental tracks from start-to-finish.

La Villa Strangiato - Rush
Obscured By Clouds - Pink Floyd
Manfred Mann - Nightengales and Bombers - Just Stunning
ELP - Tank

I'm even gonna tell you about that same album: Moonmadness. IMO Airborn is slightly better than Lunar Sea. Big%20smile

And anyway, both are far from the podium of best instrumental prog tracks Wink
The best you can is good enough...

"Lunar Sea" is undoubtedly great, but I would hesitate to classify it as the best-ever prog instrumental. There are many that I love, though one of my personal all-time favourites is "Death Warmed Up", from High Tide's debut album "Sea Shanties".

I saw the title of the topic, and before I opened it, I tought the opening post will contain the sentence "...is the best prog instrumental ever!" ...and nothing else. And, bingo! It's not far from that.Wink

Lunar Sea is really extraordinary prog-instrumental, it's one of my personal top 10 prog instrumentals, but I don't think it's the best(it's hard to say which one is).

Lunar Sea contains many great passages, but I will like to point something else out: the synth solo. It's one of the most beautiful ever SOUND-WISE (melody is great too)...I never heard such a gorgeous synth timbre...in a ELP's From The Beginning perhaps!?

I do like it, not my favourite. Cant focus my brain into deciding what is the best ever instrumental to compare it to though.
I would say that Supertwister is slightly better!

Not just the best instrumental, it's the best track ever.

I totally think of Lunar Sea as the best Progressive rock Instrumental
a perfect composition of music
Camel is a great band when it comes to instrumentals
it enough to mention (The Snow Goose) to anybody to appreciate thier instrumental-writing talent

It's a good track, of course it is, but there are many instrumentals I personally prefer. Far too many to mention here, but I could start with all the Genesis instrumentals, such as - Unquiet Slumbers For The Sleepers, In That Quiet Earth, Wot Gorilla, Los Endos, various tracks off The Lamb, After The Ordeal.
Then there is The Flower Kings with tracks such as - Circus Brimstone, Rumblefishtwist, Pioneers Of Aviation, Retropolis, Dom Of The Universe, Theme For A Hero, Blade Of Cain, etc.
Rush? La Villa Strangiato, Where's My Thing, Leave That Thing Alone, YYZ...
Steve Hackett? The Steppes, Hammer In The Sand, Jacuzzi...

And many more. Imo of course! Smile

Well, pretty much all of my favorite instrumentals are Camel.  Lunar Sea, Rhayader/Rhayader Goes to Town, Three Wishes, Ice, Earthrise, Supertwister, Airborn, La Princesse Perdue, Hopeless Anger, Sasquatch, Echoes....  and live versions of all of these!  (O.K.... some aren't instrumental but still...)

My problem with most (non-Camel) instrumental tracks is that they're generally showcasing one instrument (usually keys).  Camel has always had Latimer's awesome guitar playing up front, plus has had a whole bunch of incredible keyboardists (Pete Bardens, Dave Sinclair, Ton Scherpenzeel, Jan Schelhaas, Kit Watkins) to even him out.

I agree 100%.

I think Camel would benefit if they were a strictly instrumental band, even though I have nothing against their songs with vocals.

It's certainly memorable; I don't even like Camel and I can recall that piece.

My favourite instrumentals are more akin to Univers Zero's "La Faulx" or King Crimson's "Fracture". Not much can hold a candle to those two. =)

I actually like Aristillus the most from Moonmadness, its my favorite Camel instrumental piece, it always puts a smile on my face. Those keys sound so good!!!

But when it comes to best instrumental tracks I would say Jördrok and Lark´s pt I are the best!
