(since this is the earliest announcement, I'll post my main reply here:)

Oh dear, what a terrible news! I've only heard some concert footage of him, not with WR, but with a solo band, excellent and legendary jazz player, one of a kind fusionist.

What musical loses do we experience these days! And how sad is each one of them. Cry

RIP.

I saw him with his Joe Zawinul Syndicate several years ago at Sarajevo Jazz Fest. It was an awsome concert.

Unhappy That's sad. Zawinul was an original, influential, major talent in early jazz fusion.

RIP, Josie.

I am deeply saddened by this news.  A major contributor right up until the end.  May his music live on and may he rest in peace.

Rest in Peace, Joe.  May the music in heaven be as great as what you left for us here on earth.

I just heard the sad news that Joe Zawinul passed away today at the age of 75. I'll never forget how much of a life changing event it was when I first heard In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew, two landmark albums he recorded with Miles Davis. It was with Miles where Joe helped invent this incredible art form known as Jazz Fusion. Joe went on to make more magical music with Weather Report shortly thereafter, where came more landmark albums such as Heavy Weather. His song "Birdland" earned Grammy awards for 3 different recording artists: Weather Report, Manhattan Transfer, and Quincy Jones. He will be greatly missed.

The Mysterious Traveller took his Electric Body away in a Night Passage to the Black Market of the beyond under a Heavy Weather.

Mr. Zawinul is now Mr. Gone.

Thank you for the music - rest in peace.
