Don't be ashamed of that, I wouldn't have heard/discovered 80s Genesis, Styx, any prog metal band or Roxy Music through PA (among others) and I consider all of those mainstream.

Free Hand, Glass House, or Power and the Glory are all good starting points. Octopus is also good, but I wouldn't consider it excellent, nor a good starting place (however, the song Knots is a prog anthem and should without a doubt be in the possession of EVERY SINGLE PROG FAN IN THE WORLD!)

You know what else? In the blank space I'd also write "Genesis", because they were discovered by me thanks to PA too. And trust me, after hearing Tull, Focus, King Crimson, even Pink Floyd, I don't think they're mandatory at all

I disagree, Gentle Giant are a superb band in Symphonic Prog, really impressive, but by no reason they're more important or more essential than Genesis, this band is essential, defining in Prog Rock, wheter you like the factual music or not.

I just say that because Gentle Giant are not only the perfect archetype of a prog rock band, but they incorporate nearly every prog subgenre, and they were never subject to humilation such as other prog rock bands, and are, to boot, an excellent group.

Well, that's because Gentle Giant is a respected and charismatic band among Prog ricles, with complete and excellent musicians, and they never were really subject of humiliation like you said, because they career was short compared to other Prog Rock bands, and they never explored a more mainstream music sound and left Prog Rock behind, they just stopped instead of doing bad stuff.
