HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE
This band, with ties to The Lord Weird Slough Feg (now know only as Slogh Feg) has been around for a while and are known to pay hommage in their sound to 80's metal with a fresh sound, intricate melodies and catchy vocal arrangements.
I really dig The b*****d (especially the songs "You Should Have Slain Me" and "An Oath Sworn In Hell") and that is a very nice concept album. The August Engine while having some nice songs in it, did not grab me as much as the previous or following one. I got The Locust Years last year and after 3 listens I realized how catchy, beautiful and powerful that is. Also an album revolving around a concept and has some great protest songs (Trot Out The Dead being one very prominent one).
What's your take one this band? Any particular favourite songs and albums?

My favorite: The Locust Years. I'd like to recommend it to people who are fans of classic metal bands of the 80s like for example Iron Maiden and Judas Priest ... Hammers of Misfortune don't really sound like those two bands, but listening to them I hear these influences as much as those of 70s classic prog. A really interesting and convincing symbiosis IMO.

I agree, there's something special about them. I like how they're both influenced by 80's "classic" metal, yet have managed to take that beyond that and build a sound of their own making that one of their inigredients.
The Locust Years has some great anthemic songs in it, very melodic and dynamic, highly recommneded.

I voted for The b*****d (surely I don't have to censor the word b*****d?) out of sheer contrariness and more importantly for the fact that I got into this album before I had ever even come across Slough Feg (who I also adore, genius!).
The b*****d is a flawed masterpiece in my opinion. But it is so charming! I love Scalzi's vocal performance on tis. Note perfect what the storyline requires and it has some immense riffs! The August Engine - as good as it is,it's my least favourite. Doesn't have the cohesion of the other two, but Doomed Parade and A Room and a Riddle are masterpieces both. The Locust Years - wow! Myself and an old friend were listening to it just last Sunday (easter bank holiday weekend excess - great!) and pretty much agreed that an album so classy on every level should have a much wider audience. Everything about it oozes class - songwriting, performance, lyrics, damn it,even the artwork is great! So the heart says The b*****d, the head says The Locust Years. I voted with the heart this time round.... |
