Topic: Oceansize category Posted: October 18 2007 at 15:21 |
If we had Indie/ Modern/ Alternative Prog section, OCEANSIZE would head it for sure. But for now, where do you think they belong? They've moved far away from their previous "heavy FLOYD" sound and sound pretty unique now. Any thoughts?

An Alternative Prog section is the best idea I've heard for a new sub genre so far! So many bands would fit in there that can't fit anywhere else. I can't decide what Oceansize fits into at the moment! They've got some psych/space elements, some heavy/metal, crossover, post-rock, etc.
Great review on Frames btw :)

I chose other and I already regret it. I was tempted to say Indie...but that doesn't even qualify, it means nothing. Alternative rock, with an expermental metal and psyche touch.

Hell yeah, I'm listening to it again right now still trying to figure out how I'm gonna review it.
Yeah I think it's a great idea, even though I wouldn't necessarily call it "Modern Prog" because there's plenty of modern prog that fits into the older categories. ie. The Flower Kings - symphonic prog. But I think Alternative Prog fits a lot better. Still prog, but with a more modern rock edge and something different about it.

Indie prog is also a great idea for a new category, but there is a sound that also comes with experimental indie prog and Oceansize don't really have it.
Alt Prog sounds good though.

Yeah I know exactly what you mean. I also just reviewed Frames, full 5 out of 5 for me. It's a fantastic album and an essential addition for anything modern/alternative prog stuff in my opinion.

+1
Great prog, but their sound "alternates" between the "genres" defined in this site, so "eclectic"

"Genres" are becoming more and more useless, useful only as a reference.

Well yeah, people need a way to organize and categorize something. If there were no such thing as genres the music world would be pretty disorganized and chaotic. Hard to describe anything and get an idea of what it's like before hearing it. Even if they're not 100% accurate, it makes things a lot easier.

Thanks! Hey maybe if I write enough good ones I can get that little "prog reviewer" tag under my name.

Oceansize seems like it's becoming the new Yes, after I digest the huge amount of albums that I am going through right now, I might have to give them a go.
recomendations?

Heavy Prog or Crossover Prog. I can't understand how they ended up in Psych/Space, really. Though they do have Post-Rock influences they're far too much of a conventional Rock band to fit in that category.

Hmm...tough one.
This is a new band for me. So far I've only heard a few albums by them (Everyone Into Position and Effloresce). I'll jump on the Alt. Prog bandwagon here, it seems to be a tight fit for what I've heard of them. A little bit Radiohead, a little bit Tool, a little bit Shudder To Think, a little...etc...
I'm becoming a fan...a big fan.
File them under great for now, Alt. Prog when the genre becomes canonized.

In my review of Frames I suggested post rock. It's even obvious to me since they sound in between Tool and Anathema with maybe a bit of Green Carnation and of course a bit of their own.
