I think he is an early and very important figure in avant garde prog!
either way, I have been digging the hell out of the Ipecac Recordings release:
Ennio Morricone: Crime and Dissonance (2cd)
It is outstanding!

I personally beg to differ. by the way, what is your definition of "progressive" rock?
that is why I said "avant prog"
if you listen to some of his stuff, it is full of weird time signatures and loping parts, certainly I view it as prog.....
if John Zorn is in there, why isn't Ennio?
they are virtually inseparable stylistically.

How many of his ca. 500 scores (and that's just his movies and television soundtracks. He made something like 800 albums in all) are you basing this suggestion on?
I've got about 20 original albums from my preferred period (ca. 64-74), and a couple of best of's. I guess if you cherrypick just the right tracks you've got yourself an Avant/RIO-sounding-Morricone collection. You could even make a volume I and II.
But you could just as easily make a collection like that with most Cinecitta composers of the same period: Piero Umiliani, Nino Rota, Alessandro Alessandrini , Bruno Nicolai, Riz Ortolani... Hell, even exoticacompsers Martin Denny and Les Baxter's got some avant/chamberrock-sounding tracks.
I guess bands like Volapük, Alamaailman Vasarat, Estradasphere and Secret Chiefs 3, as well as John Zorn and Mike Patton are all inspired by most of these. Still including any of them here would be an absurd misunderstanding. PA might as well include Stockhausen or Stravinsky.
(For the last 25-30 years Morricone hasn't made anything that really exites me, and its defenetly not avantprog or avant-anything)

I love Ennio Morricone. To me he is one of the greatest movie soundtrack composers of all time. Most famous of course for his melding minds with the late great director Sergio Leone and the way they invented the "Spaghetti Western" score, with it's whistler melodies, twangy electric guitar, acoustic guitars, brass sections, wordless choral vocals and choir, avante-garde percussions, reverb experimentations, and the use of exotic musical instruments. I must also mention the other over 500? scores in different generes that this genius has produced, with a fair amount of them presented in an artsy, avante-garde approach, and very uncommercial. Progressive music? Absolutely, without a doubt whatsover! But should Maestro Morricone be included into the pages of PA? ABSOLUTELY NOT! PA descibes itself as "Your Ultimate Prog Rock Resource." Ennio Morricone has NOTHING to do with Prog Rock. He is solely in the realm of Legendary Movie Soundtrack Composer only. As composer and Conductor Maestro M writes from a classical music perspective, with a blending of yes, "progressive" experimentaion, along with infusions from many different music genres including traditional folk, jazz, latin jazz, medieval or gothic music, 60's surf, and Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass. Many of his phenominal, haunting themes have brought me to tears, a feat only obtainable otherwise by some very moving prog rock. It's nice to see Ennio getting honorable mention here, but leave him in his proper genre. Sorry for the rambling, but you see I just love this man!
