Hello, Prog Archives Community!

This is Bart from Divine In Sight. I am writing you to let you know that we are taking preorders for our next big project, O Nox Ultima: The Redemption of Antonius Carthaginius. Just yesterday I uploaded a brand new website dedicated to the project, where you can go and learn more about it:

http://www.onoxultima.com

In a nutshell, if you liked our previous effort, Sorrow & Promise, I can assure you that O Nox Ultima will not disappoint. In scope, the project is so huge that it makes Sorrow & Promise look like an indie EP in comparison. The arrangements are tighter, the guitar sounds more distinctive, and the lead vocals by new frontman Dan Kunde will be a quantum leap above my lead vocal attempts. The final album will be a 2 CD package, complete with an embedded manuscript of the O Nox Ultima screenplay in Disk 2. That's about 15 songs + 3 instrumentals and incidental music!

Thank you for having a look. Also, if you are unfamiliar with our previous work, please check out sound samples and reviews here:

No date set. A lot will depend on how the preorders go--the more we receive, the more time I can dedicate to writing and arranging (vs. working my "real job"). Seeing that I am writing the stage play, the screenplay, all the lyrics, and at least 80% of the melodies, changes, and rhythm grooves, a lot depends upon how much time I can devote to it.

Once I finish all of that, the final arrangements with the rest of the band, and the recording/mixing/mastering will go much faster. Jonathan and Frank are both ridiculously talented "one-take-wonders" who can crank through recording sessions fast. If memory serves me correctly, I gave Frank scratch copies of Sorrow & Promise about 2 1/2 weeks before recording--while he was still in college, had a family, and during the holidays--and he nailed everything in about a week. In fact, the drum part for "Sleep" was the first and only take. The guy's a freak of nature. Jonathan is the same way. I haven't worked with Dan in a studio recording setting, but he is a great live performer at his church, so I anticipate the same from him.

Ideally, I would like to finish mid 2008 in preparation for the Christmas buying season, and so that churches/community theater groups might have the chance to consider it for production as an Easter cantata for Spring 2009.

For now, we make no promises of a release date, and our verbiage in the preorder part of our web site spells this out clearly. A preorder = unconditional support for our efforts and a promise that you'll receive an advance copy of the final product upon completion.

Bart

The production on S&P was a mixed bag. The drum sounds were totally awesome. The guitar tones were just average, the bass tone could have been a bit better, and we had lots of production problems with the backing vocals, which is why they were mixed lower than they should have been. My lead vocals were a bit too distant in the mix, and we overused the sound FX.

All these problems have been completely addressed for this album.

Mix-wise, we will be going for a fat, analog sound, similar to that of Spilt Milk by Jellyfish, which, to my ears, is one of the best sounding projects I've ever heard. The Rickenbacker tone will be dead-on. And my guitar sounds will be Brian May rich and fat. Best of all, Dan Kunde's lead vocals will blow you away compared to mine (although I'll still be doing the bulk of the Queen-esque backing vox).

We've updated our site with more information about O Nox Ultima: The Redemption of Antonius Carthaginius. You can see the packaging design for the 2 CD album and companion screenplay (in paperback) on the splash page:

Also, more specific details regarding our process of writing and recording this monstrously huge project can be viewed here:
