I'm not familiar with either one of these bands. ( I Know.. shame on me) I'd like to to get a CD by each of these bands but have no idea which to get. I'd prefer heavy, dark and more keyboard oriented as opposed to alot of flutes and violins. If anything fitting this description comes to mind can you please recommend? Thank you!

Haven't heard Le Orme, but Banco is amazing. Definitely keyboard-oriented, but not all that dark.
 
Darwin! is one of my favourite albums.

If you want to buy only one CD, then get Darwin from BANCO and Felona e Sorona from LE ORME.
Actually, you can't go wrong with both bands' '70 releases; moreover, LE ORME last three albums are amongs their best (check out "Il Fiume", "Elementi" and "L'infinito") and BANCO's last 5 releases, all of them recorded live at various points in time, are essentials!

If you want the best Le Orme ever (without all that dark style) you have to listen to Uomo di Pezza, one of my favourite albums.

You won't find another album like it, even if also Collage and Felona e Sorona are really good.
Believe me.
(For Banco take Darwin, but the first is also amazing)

Well, the obvious ones are being stated, but try this one, it has the beautiful song R.I.P. on it . A classic album!!

I agree with Paloz, Uomo di Pezza most likely fits your description best, you'll love the track La Porta Chiusa...and as I said in the other thread, Felona e Sorona is another essential release with Collage (1971) and Contrappunti (1974) following behind once you digest the first two.  I'm less familiar with Banco's albums, but the first three are widely considered the best, so get whichever of these you can find.
 
If you end up liking these two groups, I would highly recommend Osanna and Metamorphosi as your next stops.

I too agree that Uomo di Pezza is your best Le Orme bet based on what you've said... Then get Felona e Sorona, Contrappunti and Collage.   Contrappunti is my particular favourite Le Orme album.

As for Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, my favourite is the first, but I'd sooner recommend Darwin! Then Io Sono Nato Libero.

And Osanna and Metamorphosi are terrific.  For dark, Jacula's a good one.

If you want dark, keyboard oriented Italian prog then try Ys by Il Balletto Di Bronzo and Zarathustra by Museo Rosenbach.

Io Sono Nato Libero is an excellent album, very Gentle Giantesque, the "dakest" they can get.
 
I can't stand Le Orme.

 I don't think that these bands are really dark. I have not heard much from Le Orme, bu i really love my 2 Banco albums, Darwin! and Io sono nato libero.

I think you should start with their debut albums and then follow the discography.
 
Anyway i love both bands and:
 
LE ORME - "Uomo Di Pezza" 1972
BANCO - "Io Sono Nato Libero" 1973

hello read your post and my recommendation is Le Orme Collage (see my review) is a very good effort with tons of agressive parts in the keyboard and bass section.
 
Of Banco i recommend the excelent first disc it's a very good one and have R.I.P. in its original form and Metamorfosi as well

I'll have to echo suggestions for "Uomo di Pezza" and "Darwin." Those are my favorites by each of these bands. However, you can't go wrong with Banco's debut and "Felona e Serona." All great albums, and good places to start. If you are interested in these bands, you also must get something from Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM). "Per Un Amico" and "Storia di Un Minuto" are must haves.

I'd recommend Felona e Sorona as an excellent place to start with Le Orme.  I've never really been able to get into Banco much.

Well also i recommend the "Storia o Leggenda" of Le Orme, and also "Verita Nacoste", the title track  of this is one of the best song of italian progresive rock

Definitely Io Sono Nato Libero by Banco. Le Orme isn't nearly as worth your time, but Felona e Sorona has "L' Equilibrio" which alone is worth half the cost of the CD.
