Question This is not a progressive rock question -- just a plain ol' music one: What band sang "How Can I Miss You, If You Won't Go Away" on what tv variety show when I was a kid? (I know the artist's name, but can't remember what show it was.) Wacko

Impress me! First one with a complete right answer wins my undying respect (priceless), and an undisclosed Emoticon (valueless). Bonus set of air drumsticks if you don't use the Web to find the answer! (Like I did for the Syd Barrett question on the guestbook....) Wink

Nope! It was a real song, by a real band. If no one can name the show, at least name the band! Cry

Here's another for you, prog-meisters: What is an "envelope modifier?" (Hint: It's not used at the post office to surreptitiously open your mail. It might be found in a Book of Saturdays....)

Peter:

I think the band was Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks, but I'm not sure of the show.

An envelope modifier "traps" a sound and then distorts or warps it, like putting a piece of paper in an envelope and manipulating the envelope.

Peace.

ClapRight on, on both counts, Maani! I knew my faith in you wasn't misplaced! That was a funny song, from a funny & weird band. Made a big impression on me! Ha! LOL I suppose the show was likely Ed Sullivan.... but could have been another. Did you see them on TV? I think the lovely female backup singers (and not the guitar playing) were the "Hot Licks" in question....Embarrassed

Re the "envelope modifier," I always thought it made an instrument (usually a guitar) sound each note "backwards." (You're the musician: enlighten me, oh wizened Wink ancient!) Isn't that one on Fripp's guitar on "Book of Saturdays?"

I'm going to guess Jethro Tull, Progman, because I know that they went through lots of name changes, before eventually being more or less forced to keep their final name.

Cinema: that was the Pre-90125 Yes name, before Anderson squeezed his was back into the group. It would have been "INTERESTING" to hear the final project sans Jon.........

Peter:

An envelope modifier could, I suppose, create a "backward" sound, though this is traditionally done with tape loops (recording it forward, and then playing the tape in reverse, like the solo in "I'm Only Sleeping").

Are you familiar with the "gizmo," a guitar synthesizer developed by ex-10CC members Kevin Godley and Lol Creme?  And are you familiar with the album they created with it, called "Consequences?"

Peace.

Yes, I heard of the "Gizmo" back in some old rock mag, but don't really know much about it, nor do I believe I've heard "Consequences." How is it? Do you have XTC's clever "Dukes of Stratosphere" project? How about Phil Manzanera/801? ("Diamond Head," "Listen Now," and "801 Live" are essential prog! Gobs of Eno in the mix!) 801 Live (E.G. records) has a killer version of Tomorrow Never Knows!  We need both Manzanera and Eno on this site!

Actually, strictly speaking, an envelope modifier would be any sound processor that manipulates the amplitude envelope (amplitude vs. time on a graph) of a sound, typically to change its transient characteristics.  This has indeed been used to create backwards guitar sounds (Adrian Belew has used this extensively, with a modified Boss echo unit), but, technically, even tremolos and compressors/sustainers are envelope modifiers.  An "envelope follower" is used in effects which alter the sound in proportion to the amplitude envelope, typically conjoined with a resonant filter to get such familiar sounds as the "funk bass".  (Stevie Wonder...)

Peter:

Consequences is one of the most amazing albums ever recorded.  The only instruments used are a piano, drums and guitars with the "gizmo."  Yet the variety of sounds and textures they create is simply astounding.  One is left dumbfounded, and unbelieving that they could create all of it with just those instruments.

Re XTC, I was a "Dukes" freak before most people knew they were XTC.  The first time I heard Collideascope on a radio station, I thought John Lennon had been resurrected!  Both albums are fantastic, and were put together in a single package with the best "retro" album name ever: Chips from the Chocolate Fireball.  I dare anyone to beat that for retro brilliance!

I was never much of a Manzanera fan, though he appears (and does some great playing) on Godley & Creme's second album, "Freeze Frame."

Peace.

Thanks for the clarification, Corbet. I like the way the EM puts the note's fade-out at the start, and its "attack" at the end. Very 70s, very Prog! Do you think it would it be tough or confusing to play live

"Never much of a Manzanera fan," Maani! Have you ever listened (I mean really listened) to his songs "Diamond Head" (off the album of the same name), or "Islands" (from "Listen Now") I find it hard to believe that you wouldn't find them lovely! Sheer shimmering and majestic beauty from a masterful -- but somewhat under-appreciated -- 70s prog guitarist! Woe (and bemused) is me! Waaahhh!
