Eh, it does to you but not to me. Instrumental talent doesn't figure in to my enjoyment of music in the least, so I would be more inclined to like something "more honest" than something that focused on instrumental talent. I'm drawn to talent in the arrangement area, as to me knowing what melodies convey the concept or emotions of a song FAR outweigh the ability to sweep or shred on guitar. All part of the "it just sounds better" argument, and that's the way my mind works.

Aight, if their melodies convey an emotion for you better, that's cool. For me, neither band really seems about conveying emotion with a melody. They are metal after all, and quite technical at that, this isn't classical, but whatever.

It's cool to like PT!?
Well, more likely than DT.

^^ See, but PW seems like show off too though, just that they aren't as talented as musicians. And I certainly can't see what you mean about the better melodies, I can't remember any of them. I think it might have something to do with that these guys seem less pretentious than DT. Their music seems more honest and less commercial. I guess I just don't take that into consideration.

I like Psychotic Waltz because they have great songwriting, really good, subtle musicianship, wonderful vocals, and very interesting lyrics. They don't sound like non-stop show-off plus the albums actually flow and progress. Better melodies, too.

(^^ can't edit) You know I'd actually like to hear why you, either of you, think PW is better than DT. Just explain what you feel is better about them and I'll see if I can picture it. That would be interesting.

Well, many people consider Dream Theater as a mediocre mix of Metallica and Rush... I love IAW, Awake and ACOS, but these people are closer to the truth than you... IMHO of course.

And people can say that of DT, and not without reason. I'd think you could see that DT has more of their own sound than PW though. If you hear a DT song, you know it's DT, if you hear a PW song... it could be any one of those tech/"extreme" bands unless you're very familiar with them. DT is obviously more insane as well, which is pretty much the point of both bands, but also DT are, IMHO, better songwriters. I'm just saying I'm not hearing any greatness in PW. It's not very original or professional, IMHO, of course.

Of course, but with alot of bands I can see why people would think it's good but still I don't like it. These guys just sound amatuerish compared to DT though. There have been way better bands just like this. Dream Theater is one of prog metal's founding bands and created the definitive prog metal sound.

I really hope you aren't saying that PW has delicate, beautiful melodies, both of these bands get into some nonsensical speed.

I'm checking out Psychotic Waltz on YouTube as I type this. Sounds pretty good to me. Exactly the kind fo thing I've been looking for. When I mentioned I was a Dream Theater fan to some people they said I'm like Symphony X. Tried 'em and they sucked. Badly.Dead

^ Right, because there's only one way to perceive, judge, and evaluate music. There's no way to objectively evaluate talent because talent is perceived subjectively. Some people like nonsensical speed, some like delicate, beautiful melodies, you get the picture. Another thing, anyone who evaluates talent is doing so in their own view which doesn't apply to anyone else. No one can define what is good in music.

are kidding me?how are gonna ask question about a band that most people never heard of.
Shocked
it is like saying what band is better Marillion or Nexus (Argetinian Prog band).
Nexus is 3,0000 times better, but I bet that nobody heard of them so the vote will go for marillion. got it? Embarrassed

I love both bands, actually. PW's two first are near-masterpieces, but DT's I&W and Awake releases are among Prog-Metal's finest albums. I'll vote DT for now, since PW's last two albums are much weaker than their two first.

It doesn't look as bad as comparing their record sales figures.
Too bad that hdfisch, Marc Baum, Riversdancing and other people with a refined taste in prog metal don't post and vote here.

Ha, listen to High on Fire and see if Psychotic Waltz still sounds like "stoner metal".
