GARGAMEL from Norway makes prog rock that throws back to the 70's prog in the lines of VdGG with an added experimental touch. Their 2006 release, Watch For The Umbles , received praises and is an excellent album. http://www.gargamel.no/

LOBSTER NEWBERG is a young band from the USA (Illinois) which are heavily influenced by bands such as KC, VdGG, Allman Bros, Beatles etc. Nothing new under the sun but well done and great melodies.

In terms of band identity and finding their own sound, I think Gargamel is the one; however it doesn't mean LN is an inferior band.
Which one do you like more? Moreover, which one do you think has the potential to develop more and create a unique sound?

Maybe if I added DISCIPLINE (which will reform and perform in Nearfest this year)  this thread would get more responses.

I'll go with Gargamel.

Lobster Newburg are very good for a bunch of kids, but there are so many moments on their album that are almost, dare I say it,ripped off from other bands.

Hehe, indeed.

Which made me think if they came overcome that and develop a sound of their own (rather of his own and the lead man is all that's left in the new lineup).

Any suggestions for  retro-prog in the vein of Gargamel?

Aside from the band competing with them and Discipline, is there anything else like this?

Not that I can think of right now... But I must be forgetting....
there's Beardfish and Magic Pie that you know, Black Bonzo, to a lesser extent Oaksenham, Puppet Show (Genesis like), Anton Roolaart... But no one who's quite similar to these bands.

From all of those mentioned I know of Magic Pie. I'm looking for a darker sound, but not Scandinavian Prog (although a couple less known recommendations from there will do me good).

Any other new prog band heavily influenced by VDGG?
