Perhaps they were referring to Jon McLaughlin.

Huge Mahavishnu fan...didn't really check out his other stuff. Anyway, here is the main question I have.

I was driving with my college buddies another guy and two girls. They were listening to the radio so of course it was all pop. Some really decent pop song came up and I was just tuning out...but I can remember it being something decent. So after it was over they were talking about how it was pretty good and who the artist was. One of them said John McLaughlin. Does anybody know if he wrote some poppy stuff or had any 'hits'.

I'm very curious about this.
